:hehe:

You must have the overclocked pantsu version. The overclocking causes the purple polka dots.

The reason this one is labeled like that is because it has a special chip in it that de-mosaics on the fly while you're watching any sort of video.

Wow, you really must have done as much research as I did, it's true the overclocked ones are the shiroi pantsu, but i spilled grape soda on mine when i saw the internal packaging.  :beaten:

Like Dave Chappelle said there is only grape drank which is made from "sugar, water, and purple."

So, I decided to give it a go and upgrade my laptop to Vista SP1. After about an hour of downloading and restarting, the machine allows me to log back on. I figure that, as this is a Microsoft update, it can't go completely smoothly.

After the desktop comes up, I noticed that I had no sound. Funny, I had sound an hour ago. Seems as if I no longer have an audio driver. Luckily, that's not such a bad problem. A few minutes later, sound is back; it'd better be as I watch my J-Drama on this machine.

I'm now running it through it's paces to see if there are any new "surprises." At least I can get on the internet....

There shouldn't be many new surprises if Vista was running fine before SP1, although with Vista nothing is guaranteed.

Gave the Comodo Firewall program the boot as it was just too annoying. For some reason it just wouldn't remember my choices for programs I usually run, so every time I opened up Firefox I would get a little pop up asking for permission to give Firefox access to the Internet ports. I'm just sticking with Windows Firewall for now.

Lastly a screenshot of the Paint program in the next iteration of Windows showed up a few days ago. Nothing special, but it looks like the Ribbon UI of Office '07 will used in Windows as well.

There's also one with Wordpad floating around, also employing the Ribbon UI. Windows 7, from what I hear, however, will not be about radical UI changes - the latest Windows Weekly podcast shares some tidbits on it. It's a good broadcast - I like the work that Leo Laporte does on twit.tv (out before twitter)

You're right. So far, so good. Video playback is intact. J-Drama viewing is unaffected.

A few non-scientific observations.

Copying large files seems faster and more responsive. Before it would be "calculating time remaing" forever, and would only update progress every 20-30 seconds or so. I've had a Drama file copy say "34532 days remaining". Now, it updates every second and the file transfer seems faster, tho that may be a subjective side effect.

Waking from sleep is much faster, and the wireless network reconnets almost immediately.

A few system windows now remember size and location. Nothing big, was just an annoyance.

So far, all the free programs that I use (like Open Office, 7zip, ffdshow, MPC, Notepad++) all work as before.

^ Wasn't there an issue with Vista and DivX codecs at one time?
