Anyone have a Canon inkjet printer? Have any problems with it?

I brought home my brother's Canon inkjet (i850) and it looks like the print head is shot... It's the second Canon he's had where the print head failed after a number of years...

Did (does) he regularly clean the print head? I love Canon printers, it's the only brand I've ever owned. But dealing with with separate print head, is definitely something that turns people away from these printers. The first C printer I had, I never cleaned the print heat and the thing crapped out. However, my current all-in-one, I clean the heat regularly (depends how often you print) and I've yet to have problems.

You used the word "Canon" too many times.

Moderators should be exempt from that spam filter :grumble:

He cleaned the print heads, but apparently not enough...

Well, I'm not gonna spend $60 for a new print head, so this printer is going to the trash.

His replacement printer is an all-in-one HP... And their print heads are part of the ink cartridge, so he gets a new print head every time he buys a new cartridge. :victory:

+1.

And some of the regulars as well, to be fair.

Maybe something like members with over 100 or so posts are exempt from the anti-spam, seeing that most spammers only post a few times at most.

I'm sure G could implement that. Spammers aren't usually that patient :-)

Done. The minimum number of posts is not revealed though, but it should be enough to filter away a typical spammer.

I think it's time for me to upgrade my PC: my hardsub/compile/encode times are becoming less tolerable... My Core2Duo PC at work processes those jobs in at least half the time, if not faster.

Maybe a Quad would be even better for these types of tasks, huh?

Since you do a lot of video processing I'm sure you will not regret upgrading your PC.

Definitely.

My avi to mpg encode of a single Nodame - Finale episode takes a mere 10 minutes on the Core2Duo PC at work, whereas it takes about 25-30 minutes on my Athlon XP2600+ at home.

Thing is, would a Quad core be a better choice over a Dual core?

That's a huge difference.

I am a bit out of my depth here...but I would think it would be better since you have more muscle built into the microprocessor. I am sure a really beefy graphics card would aid your cause too. Like a top shelf Nvidia or Radeon card....

I think graphics is less of an issue, especially when it comes to encoding/compiling... That's more about CPU than GPU.

Ah, I see.

There must be some forum for like minded individuals that discuss the issue with some depth....right?

Yup... Looking into that. :victory:

I think a quad core would perform better than a dual core out of the box, but a greater benefit would be achieved if the encoding software is written to take full advantage of the additional cores. Otherwise, it's up to how well the OS uses the cores.
