I think a quad core would perform better than a dual core out of the box, but a greater benefit would be achieved if the encoding software is written to take full advantage of the additional cores. Otherwise, it's up to how well the OS uses the cores.

The expert chimes in...

I was hoping you'd chime in. :victory:

I'm still using WinXP, so I don't know how well it could take advantage of a Quad...

I think I might've locked in on a new computer...

Barebones kit:
Biostar TA780G M2+ Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X2 240 Dual Core CPU
Corsair XMS2 PC6400 800MHz 2GB DDR2 RAM
Power Up Black ATX Mid-Tower Case w/450W PSU

$220. :victory:

Not sure if it's worth the extra money... About $100 more.

Oh I see.

Been doing quite a bit of reading today... Seems that most of software tools out there aren't optimized for Quad cores...

I suppose one could plan for the future, but with the evolution and competition in PC-land, why spend the money now?

Upgrading is pretty much a way of life, so trying to stay head of the curve is useless, IMO... A intermediate upgrade to get the maximum bang for the least amount of bucks is my approach. :victory:

How's that for rationalizing? :beaten:

Besides, I'm cheap.

Makes sense! I think even Dochira concurred regarding the software tools. Well I'm sure your new kit will save your sanity and reduce your video processing time :)

Or I could do all my video tasks at work.

LOL, I pretty much did that for most of the day today: a number of people bailed out for Good Friday. :beaten:

ya know, my PC at work is a dual core, but our main software suite doesn't support dual cores, or even more than 750k of memory. anyways, the extra core runs F@h, or a second instance. It's usually better to overbuy than to underbuy and have to upgrade later.. imo.

Thing is, upgrading is the nature of consumer electronics, so overbuying is only gives you temporary satisfaction, IMO.

it's not the nature, it's what advertisers want you to think. I'm more concerned with utility rather than the buying high. i've been using my computer for 7 years now. There's only a few things i can't do still, and if it take a long time to encode something, i just let it run while im at work. That said, it's about time to change again, i can't run h264 and such properly.

Still fiddling with the PC... Has a cool Smart Fan features that changes the CPU fan speed to regulate the CPU core temperature. :victory:

What music player will sync with my electric piano keyboard? Okay, so I connected my keyboard to my PC. It's installed and my computer recognizes it as a device in my control panel. But, None of my music players will recognize that I have it plugged in. What music player will recognize I have it plugged in?

I know that and you know that, but the antivirus program might not know that.

It gives several blank boxes to check but they already have checked the one saying 'Deny access' and this I click. there is another box which says 'Delete' and another saying 'Ignore' plus a couple others.
It squeaks at me each time.

If I say 'ignore' does this give it any entry into my PC first?

Peg

Yes, it does.

Does the popup message give you any more details regarding the virus?
13 May 2010, 13:06 #5499
It says something like...

HTML/Infected/Ad.Gen

It is only when I am entering this site and every time I change from one thread to another.
Honestly I am afraid to do anything other that what the Anti virus tells me which is to.."Deny access'

Now I have to mention that right this minute I opened up this site again(on seperate page) to make sure I was giving you the correct info and this time it did not shriek at me and the anti virus window did not open up.

I will turn off everything and start over and see what happens.
Greatly appreciate your input BMW

BMW,

I don't know if you did something or if you scared the life out of this but when I closed and now re opened this site the virus problem has gone. I did nothing, so either you scared it away or did something very clever or it just got tired of threatening me.
Thanks millions anyway.
