Technically you shouldn't need to anywhere. The OS should close any open file handles when the program terminates (no matter how it does: cleanly or through brute force). Sometimes things fall through the cracks.

I'm sure all of us have come across this: Trying to rename or move a file or folder and getting "access denied" because the "file is currently in use" when you have closed the program that was using it, or removed the file from what was using it (such as a BT client). Any way to get Windows to let the file go without rebooting?? This happens to me a lot in XP and it drives me nuts.
If it's a video, don't use the mouse (drag and drop), because it reads information about it, like resolution, length... and tries to pop up the info. :banghead:
Use ctrl+x and ctrl+v to move it or ctrl+c and ctrl+v to copy it.

Sounds like something The Professor would do on Gilligan's Island.

I just looked at the brand of this machine and it's Sony. I'll take a look and see what I can do. No guarantees though.
Edit: Are you sure it isn't the Sony VAIO PCV-S520? :headscratch:
Aren't all Sony PCs called VAIOs?
My friend's sister had one of those: most/all of the hardware was dedicated to that machine... You couldn't substitute things to help you troubleshoot hardware problems. :bleh:
I believe so. I was sure if the model number was PCV, or PSV.

You could...but you probably wouldn't be able to use the "backup/install" disc any longer. :shakehead:
Trust me, it isn't limited to Sony PCs. I've been harping about that for some time now, but since I don't work in that actual product line, it's like talking to thin air. No wait, the air actually listens to me. :beaten:
If you're curious, there's a tool called Process Explorer from Sysinternals that supposedly will show you which process (program) still has which file opened. Likewise there is a Windows program available on the 'net that is a version of the "kill" command in Unix/-nix that will terminate a process even if Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do it. But this is getting quite technical. If you know what "kill" does, then it may be for you.
Otherwise, I would just reboot and then get rid of the offending file. It's a hassle (I agree), but it doesn't involve being geeky. :)
Yeah, my problem tends to be when I try to rename or cut-move files. I C-A-D and the program is always closed and I can't figure out why or what is still grabbing the file. Pisses me off :argh: I usually end up rebooting. Now it's happening more often than not.....
I am burning programs onto dvd's, using the program Nero. I figured out how to burn j-dramas on dvd's, but i have a question.
How do I limit the path?
basically after i copy the info onto the dvd, and test out the dvd. I see the folder, but there so many paths(folders, 6 levels deep), before i can access the drama episodes.
C:\documents and setting\owner\desktop\denshaotoko\(episode files...)
that is just an example, there are atleast 5 or 6 paths in order to access my dramas. It works, but it is a hassle. I never had to deal with this when i clicked and dragged the files to burn cd's.
Anyone else deal with this using Nero while burning data on Dvd's?
by the way, i access the menu - dvd, "Backitup", and follow the directions, but i don't see an area where i can click and drag a folder, i have to select it, and when i do, and start it up, it selects that long "path" of folders, but it copies it, and works. :bonk:
Q, you don't want to make a backup, you want to make a data disc. I'm guessing you have Nero Express installed. If you do, pick your DVD recorder (make sure it said "DVD" not "CD"), then drag and drop the files into the window that follows. It should be clear after that.

ok, thanks, i will give it a try. :fingerscrossed:
