Is the video and audio hardware part of the motherboard? If so, you should be able to download the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer...

If not, open up your computer and take a look at who makes your video and sound cards, then go to the manufacturer's site and get the drivers there.

Another alternative is to installed Windows 2000 or XP: they might/should have more updated drivers to support your hardware...

Good luck.

I just looked at the brand of this machine and it's Sony. I'll take a look and see what I can do. No guarantees though.

Edit: Are you sure it isn't the Sony VAIO PCV-S520? :headscratch:

so nice to be back, and using my desktop with 19" LCD screen, don't have to scroll back and forth using a smaller screen.

wonder if they come any larger, like 23" screens, but they would probably jump a lot in price...

This is kinda random and I hope there is a simple and effective answer. I'm sure all of us have come across this: Trying to rename or move a file or folder and getting "access denied" because the "file is currently in use" when you have closed the program that was using it, or removed the file from what was using it (such as a BT client). Any way to get Windows to let the file go without rebooting?? :sweat: This happens to me a lot in XP and it drives me nuts.

Have you made sure that the program is actually closed?

Open the Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) to verify if the program is actually closed, if not, kill the job.

If you can't kill the job, then you're pretty much stuck with having to reboot. :sweat:

7-Zip. http://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/
It's free and open source!
It supports unicode like kanji too. :thumbsup:

The main features of 7-Zip:

* High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression
* 7-Zip is free software distributed under the GNU LGPL
* Supported formats:
o Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
o Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM and DEB
* For ZIP and GZIP formats 7-Zip provides compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
* Self-extracting capability for 7z format
* Integration with Windows Shell
* Powerful File Manager
* Powerful command line version
* Plugin for FAR Manager
* Localizations for 59 languages

I've been using it for more than 6 months and didn't have any problems.
I'm using version 4.29 .

sometimes this happens to me even AFTER i reboot. the problem usually resolves itself after a couple of weeks or so.

If you're curious, there's a tool called Process Explorer from Sysinternals that supposedly will show you which process (program) still has which file opened. Likewise there is a Windows program available on the 'net that is a version of the "kill" command in Unix/-nix that will terminate a process even if Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do it. But this is getting quite technical. If you know what "kill" does, then it may be for you.

Otherwise, I would just reboot and then get rid of the offending file. It's a hassle (I agree), but it doesn't involve being geeky. :)
