The streak was the longest. I've had others of 25-30 days (interrupted by the occasionally hotfix).
But I'm wondering if this drive will be on the low end of the mean time.
some basic questions,
how long can data(video) last on a dvd+r, infinite?, if stored, or should i bother to make back up and more back up, seems wasteful.
how long can one leave their computer(desktop) constantly running? not that i do it more than say 48-72hrs non-stop, i tend to rest my computer every other day, or daily. just wondering...
Anyone here using clubbox?
I recently installed one to get itazura no kiss on it since there's not a lot of torrent seeders at d-addicts.
anyway, noticed that after sometime, FSCAGENT (comes with clubbox) started eating up all my upload bandwidth even though I wasn't uploading.
Reinstalled clubbox and the same thing happens after a while. no idea what its uploading coz nothing shows up in the upload tab. anyway, I just limited FSCAGENT upload to 1kb/s so it doesnt use up my upload bandwidth...
any idea what FSCAGENT uploads even though you did not expressly uploaded anything?

on good media, you can expect at least 10 years of reliable data retrieval from a burned disc... that meaning the proper humidity, light, undisturbed, no bending, etc. All media of that type will degrade over time, and making a backup of a backup at the same time is pointless unless it's something very important and the chances of you being able to replace the data are small.
i've leave my mac running constantly, since it does it's maintainence automatically. an XP machine.. i'd reboot at least once a week.

more like the Iron Mountain salt mines.
50 years if it's kept at optimum conditions, of course, that's just an educated guess based on accelerated time simulations, because obviously CD/DVD-R's haven't been around for 50 years. Because of how media like this is made (layered), they will eventually seperate, especially since disc layers have different densities.
Besides, what commercial media do you expect to be around for 50 years?
I mean, seriously, i have crap that i backed up on CD 5 years ago, that I dont need anymore. Would i even bother going back in 27 years and asking Memorex for a replacement disc on the 50 year warranty?
Will CD/DVD's even still exist in 50 years? In 5 years, i fully expect to move all my stuff on DVDs onto some other media.

Yeah, I guess age, even with optimal conditions, will take it's toll on the media, 'cause of the dissimilar materials... I did read from the Maxell site that the media was supposed to last 100 years...

Then it really is crap. :beaten: ;)

Just to see if they still stand by their warranty. :D

I would expect that they'd migrate to smaller, denser discs or possibly semiconductor media like Compact flash, etc...
I'm waiting for cheap 50GB blueray disc. I'll back up my 100s of CD and put them in a big garbage can. I can keep my junk for a few more years, but it's mostly because I'm running out of space. Only one 50GB disc is almost 70 cds...
I still have a few double density 5" 1/4 floppies. :ashamed:
BTW krim, how's the weather is C21H30O2? Cloudy? ;) :hehe:

Until recently, I had a machine that still had a 5.25" disk drive.
How long does media last? Who knows? But on one of my CDs, I am noticing some peeling occurring at the edges. It hasn't quite reached the data portion, but it does happen.

geez....50gb for a single disc!, when is this suppose to come out? that can hold a lot of j-dramas...must be expensive for the one disc.

10 years....for optimal conditions, and what about media that is decent, i have great quality brand dvd+r, and storaged in a regular room on my desk. How long should the data last? any difference on dvd brand?
also, on leaving your computer on, atleast for desktops, in some way, isn't it better leave it running, than shutting it down daily? not sure what the life expectancy on the fan/motor's computer...:headscratch:
krim wrote:i replace the fans whenever they start to get noisy.
quality discs should be laquered to the edge... none of that printable or shiny topped ones.
TDK has a good "armored" DVD-R, that's supposed to be the best. about $5 each though.
i replace the fan on one of my older computers, that eventually crapped out, long ago, it was a noisy fan.
my current one is fine, so, keeping it on i am not concerned, since i try to rest my computer every so often, just was wondering on what the avg lifespan of a computer...
dvd+r, as long as they last for a good amount of time, not sure about storing it in optimal conditions, but average will do.
