They started the production in December, but on a small scale. As far as I know, the recorder and media aren't on sale yet. They'll be pricy at first, like the CD-R and DVD-R when they came out. I remember paying $500 for a CD burner and for my 2x DVD burner over $600. The 1st drive might cost over $1000. :bleh:
The PS3 will have a blu-ray drive and recorders are schedule to ship during the first quarter of 2006.

And you can expect those blu-ray disks to be even more expensive. Although 50gb sounds wow! what if it gets scrathed/become unreadable over time? losing a dvdr is a pain already, hell I got pissed when I couldn't read a cdr that I kept in jewelcase from the start. So I'm kinda sceptical towards these new media: I'll wait n see.
life of a computer? I still got my Pentium 90 system and it's still working. so I'd say pretty long. my other computers, like my server and my main rig are on for like 300days a year.
Loosing that much data would be a pain. :shamefulcry:
Found some info on fan life.
Ball bearing fans: 50 000hrs (2083 days ~ 5 years and 8 months)
Sleeve Bearing fans: 30 000 hrs (1250 days ~ 3 years and 5 months)
If you shutdown your computer from time to time it should last for at least 10 years. :) We have a few computers here that runs 24h a day (mail server, spam filter server, proxy server...) . They are almost never rebooted and, as far as I know, they never crash. Although, I remember once, a network card died and 3 power supplies died as well.

the hamster in my computer never loses steam....that fool runs and runs....
I just checked the Western Digital website. It looks like the warranty for drives is 3 years. :woot:
....for drives manufactured or bought after June 2005. :puppydog:
.... So it looks like I may be SOL. Oh well it was only $19, but it'll be more to replace it.
.... I just saw a link to extend the warranty to 3 years for $14.95. Hmmm... but the drive would have to fail before then. It's making noises, but not completely dead yet. I unplugged it to prevent further damage until I can get a replacement and copy the data over. The drive is on life support, but I can't pull the plug just yet.

Go for one of those super-large Seagate drives that Fry's has been advertising... :D

I actually stopped by Fry's at 8am this morning (yeah geeky me), and saw a 500GB drive for $200 something. Nice to have that much capacity in one drive, but really scary should it fail.

I've been backing up the drive, but with each passing DVD, the noise seems to be getting louder. I think I'm going to get a second drive, and move all the data in one fell swoop.
