HEY! HEY! HEY! MUSIC CHAMP 02/23/04
HAMA: Tonight's guest is...ARASHI!
(automatic metal door reveals Arashi members)
MATSU: It's been 5 years?
HAMA: Yeah it's already been 5 years, this is the second time they're here in this program.
MATSU: Eh...really?
HAMA: The first time is not long after you first debuted right?
AIBA: Yes.
MATSU: At that time you guys were singing "Arashi~" "Arashi~", weren't you? I didn't see the kanji "mountain", so I felt like it was written as "wind".
( he was actually joking here. they displayed the "ARASHI" japanese character on the screen and then the kanji for mountain located at the top of the character falling over with a very funny sound effect LOL!! )
HAMA: Tonight, you guys are the CHAMPS.
ARASHI: Thank you, thank you.
MATSU: You're gonna be singing "Arashi" tonight. It'll probably gonna cause a huge uproar, ne?
HAMA: Please go and prepare for a bit, after that, we'll talk.
(ARASHI PERFORMS THEIR DEBUT SONG, "A-RA-SHI". )
*******************************************
HAMA: This is the second time that you guys are here, when was the first time?
AIBA: It wasn't long after we debuted.
MATSU: How old was everyone at that time?
SHO: We were all in our late teens, the oldest was..
OHNO: 18.
SHO: And the youngest was..
NINO: 16.
HAMA: How did you all join JE?
SHO: For us, we sent in an application form. Some were sent by family members and others were sent by themselves. The ones who got theirs sent by family are..
NINO: Me and also...
(waiting for Oh-chan to follow)
OHNO: (snaps out of his reverie LOL!! ) Eh! Me? Yeah, me.
HAMA: Did your family members get your permissions to send the applications?
OHNO: My mom told me that she filled it up and already sent it. I thought, "Don't send it out just like that so easily!", and she got angry and responded with, "You will never pass with that kind of attitude!".
MATSU: It's like you and your mom should each have a different form!
HAMA: How about Nino?
NINO: As for me, since I was always playing basketball, my application was sent off by my cousin. The reply came in a half year later and that's when I noticed that she sent it out. Then there was this Sunday that I didn't want to go because I have a baseball game, and my mom said, "These chances only comes once in a lifetime and won't come back if you miss them. I'd give you 5000 yen if you go!"
MATSU: Give you 5000 yen?!
NINO: Yeah, so I joined like that.
HAMA: How did everyone else join?
SHO: We sent it out ourselves.
HAMA: If you send it in yourself, then you're supposed to be having an interview or audition?
SHO: Yeah, I got a white envelope after a month. My mom opened it and there was a green letter enclosed inside. It said I passed the first phase of the interview and gave date (october) and place on where I should report to. It felt like I didn't really passed anything. Then I went to an audition after I passed the interview.
HAMA: So everyone got a green letter then?
OHNO: Yeah I got one.
AIBA: I didn't.
HAMA: Then why are you sitting here?!
AIBA: I don't know.
NINO: Maybe he forgot already.
JUN: I didn't get one either.
HAMA: Then how did you get in here?!?!
NINO: He was specially chosen, he's an elite.
HAMA: Elite?! So for Johnny's you can be an elite?!
MATSU: No wonder your hair can be like that.
JUN: I didn't go to an audition, Mr. Johnny called me on the weekend.
HAMA: Ah, he called you himself?
JUN: Yeah, I think it was him. He asked, "Is this Jun's residence?". I got the phone and said, "Moshi moshi", and then he went on, "You have a practice session at Asahi TV. YOU come!".
[In this case, they're making fun of the expression "YOU" because Mr. Johnny often uses "YOU" when talking to someone in a commanding or demanding manner. example, "YOU get over here!" LOL! It's very hilarious! XD ]
HAMA: He said it!!!
MATSU: It's just like how you say "YOU do it!" or "YOU eat!!"
JUN: I didn't even know what was going on, but he said, "It's Johnny's Entertainment." So I said I'm going and went for the practice session and gradually became a junior.
HAMA: Then the others were chosen after auditioning?
SHO: But I never got any confirmation if I passed the auditions.
NINO: Yeah because they didn't tell anything after the try outs.
SHO: There're lots of people, one after another was called out, then soon, pretty much there're only 2 people left. So at that time I didn't know if I passed or not.
MATSU: It's like those love long runs. You don't even know when you started interacting with each other, the feeling just grows as time flies. And when you finally notice it, you realize you're in love with each other.
HAMA: You really have a lot to say.
MATSU: Eh?! You calling me a big mouth?!
HAMA: The session always continues? How was the training?
AIBA: I was clueless that time. When I first started, I didn't know anything about Johnny's Entertainment. I didn't know how to dance or sing. SMAP had a basketball program on TV - I love SMAP. Because I always play basketball, they needed someone to play basketball with SMAP. So I joined.
MATSU: So you wanted to play basketball with those kids?
AIBA: The one at the front was hugging a ball.
HAMA: Yeah, like you would really play basketball there..so naive.
AIBA: It's not what you think. I asked the girls in my class how I could play basketball with SMAP, it wasn't really my idea. They suggested that I should apply and get in JE so I could join the show. (SMAP program where they play basketball called "I LOVE SMAP").
(Hama smacks Aiba's head!! LOL! )
MATSU: So you took the ball with you?
AIBA: Uh.. yeah. But the rest brought the uniforms and stuff, no one brought a basketball except me. I regretted bringing it with me.
HAMA: It was very uncool of you eh?
AIBA: Yeah, not cool at all. So I scooted at the back, hid the ball and then walked in.
MATSU: Did you back out when they asked you to dance?
AIBA: No.
HAMA: So all you guys auditioning all had to dance?
NINO: It depends on the location. Pretty much, you just practice dancing in the rehearsal room. They also said the same thing to us when it comes to summer concerts later. "Perform like this!" then everyone just sort of moved at the back on top, depending on his (Mr. Johnny) judgement.
HAMA: Eh? This is pretty interesting, he suddenly says "Perform like this!" What~~
NINO: Then everyone performs.
HAMA: So what do you do on stage?
NINO: Just go all over different directions and shaking! [ in other words, dancing and performing XD]
HAMA: Amazing!
MATSU: Come and perform!!
HAMA: Shake~~
SHO: There is this one time they made Nino ride a bike on stage.
MATSU: YOU rode it across the stage? [remember the "YOU" joke?! LOL!!! ]
NINO: Maybe I got chosen because of those kind of activities.
HAMA: Did everyone know each other from practice sessions? The group was formed after sessions right?
SHO: There was a little difference in terms of age, felt like seniors-juniors relationship for about a year. Then everyone was doing a commercial tour for JRs then the group was formed.
HAMA: When was the group formed?
SHO: Nino, Jun and I heard about the group's formation. We felt like it's really gonna be troublesome so Nino and I went to the office and wanted to oppose the idea, the director wasn't there but there was a document in there with a list names.
MATSU: Oh, you saw the confidential documents?!
SHO: It has english names like "ABC" and others has a question mark beside their names.
MATSU: Questions?! That's awful!
SHO: Yeah, it's pretty awful. They wrote like, "Why not a single kanji charactered japanese word?", then I flipped a page and saw a big kanji just like "ARASHI", EEEHHH??
MATSU: The name's nice. Be glad it's not KOTOBUKI or something.
HAMA: What about the others?
AIBA: Those 3 were picked into the group first.
JUN: Everybody was separated.
NINO: When I joined, Sho was already chosen. They asked me "Why don't you join in too?" before I debuted. I never wanted to join, I always refused.
HAMA: You didn't want to join?
NINO: Once I went to a rehearsal with Jun. The JRs were playing volleyball inside the room, I was thinking, "What are these people were doing?!". So I just sat and watched on the side. That's when Mr. Johnny came and suggested for us to join the game. I didn't want to go, but it wouldn't be nice if we continue to sit so we went. Before we realized, only 2 of us were left, Mr. Johnny said, "You play pretty well". That initiates the formation of the group.
SHO: There were some changes too. But when they wanted to make a CD, the best singer at that time was Ohno.
HAMA: What did you do afterwards?
OHNO: I also got tested and still considering of quitting.
MATSU: (frustrated) You guys all wanna quit when you just started?!?!?!
SHO: At that time, Ohno was just..
OHNO: 18
SHO: And was graduating high school, so he was still considering about circumstances like that.
OHNO: They sent me to recording. The verse book said, "OHNO SOLO". Then someone told me, "Next week we are going to Hawaii". So we immediately had a press conference there.
HAMA: In Hawaii?!
AIBA: Yeah, on a Hawaiian cruise ship.
MATSU: What if there suddenly came a storm?!
HAMA: So you were informed you're heading to Hawaii?
OHNO: I was told that we were going to Hawaii, but I didn't know what was going on, then I packed my stuffs and met the other 3.
SHO: There was only 4 people at that time.

HAMA: You guys are clueless as to why you're going to Hawaii?
MATSU: So that green letter wasn't very useful after all.
Hama: They must've sent out many at once. They must've sent the letter after they saw the information and picture of the kids.
SHO: Now there are really many kids coming to the application office in their elementary years.
MATSU: Like 2nd to 3rd grade kids?
SHO: Yeah, like at the 2nd grade, 3rd grade kids. There was this one time Mr. Johnny told us before a concert that he got a picture for a 2 month year old baby. "This isn't a day-care!."
HAMA: That's just not right.
MATSU: YOU two month old baby should stick with your mom!! (LOL!! XDD over-usage of "YOU" )
(Then they perform PIKANCHI DOUBLE)
