Yeah, as a chick I have to agree with ya' timing is everything. I used to tutor a few guys in calc. and I had absolutely know clue they liked me (of course I tutored the second guy at a much later date than the first). The first one started to give me flowers right away for what seemed to be no apparent reason and he freaked me out. His friend finally told me the reason why I was getting the flowers. Needless to say I resigned as his tutor. He just came on too fast. The second guy didn't give me anything until after the fourth month of tutoring him. He gave me a single rose for my b-day. I thought that was the sweetest thing ever. I eventually fell for the guy and well...hopefully it turns out like that this guy.
I think girls are very inituitive with the signals that guys give out, especially if they like them. It is only good if the feeling is mutual, but that is the chance we guys take on you girls. "Timing" is the key to everything. I personally, would not give any flowers until, i know it is an actual date that she and I are going on. Maybe a bit old fashion, but i am not going to invest long stemmed red roses unless i know she is my girl. I would get to know the girl more, and read between the lines. If i am getting a good feeling and know she might like me back in the same way, then i will pursue her more, slowly. After quite a few relationship experiences, i think i have a better understanding of what women might want and feel in a relationship. I think it is a nice gesture to give flowers, especially red roses, but that is a strong statement. I use to give flowers to my ex-gf while we were dating, a dozen red or orange/pinkish roses were common.
Maybe for me, courtship is a process, and it shouldn't be taken lightly, but at the same time dating can be and should be fun. Flowers are ok for an "actual" date, and i think it would impress the girl. If i ask a girl on a date, then i will probably get her some flowers, like a mixed colored one, or orange, just not "red", yet.
