but in my honest opinion the strength of a religion lives in its tolerance of other people and their views. many religions today do not, and that shows how weak they are, i believe.
I'd like to add something more about the role of a religion.
I know it's quite a mess in continental china about religion. But when u think about it, according to many intellectuals (among whom there are some chinese intellectual) christianism, or the idea of a single god being kindly to each person and conveying a message of love though social classes, is a very important step to democracy. In comparison, it appears that confucianism was favourable to the emperor, which wasn't bad, but which seems to be outdated nowadays. I don't say confuciasnm has no future either : in my own opinion, I like the filial piety it conveys, and also the importance given to the spoken words, to promises. One might call this sense of honor, though I prefers the word piety to describe it. Anyway, chinese are making a sort of melting-pot to grow up; and one may fear they lose their own identity, but for my part I think they'll be okay. Even if I'm kinda worried for young chinese who feel lost, like in shanghaï for example, I think a several times millenar culture cannot be undone so easily. It can be bearfooted for a few decades but not more. They'll find a good mix somehow. Same goes with young japanese and koreans, with their respective cultures of course.
Well I cut the whole explanation short, cause I m not really qualified to talk about that, it's just what I remember from one of my readings. That was for the apport of religion among the big bunch of philosophical concepts in Asia =).
