Yeah, but I didn't need to have so many instructions on how to ride a bike saved on my computer/on my LJ. :P

Did you have instructions on your computer when you learned how to ride a bike?

If not, then you can't make the comparison. :P

Hello folks! Can anyone recommend me a good and free mpeg to avi converter? I was going to get TMPGEnc, but I just realized that it only had a 14-day free trial period.

Open-source converter: I haven't tried it yet, but apparently will convert .mkv (Matroska) to .avi - http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

Thanks, I'll try this out, my dvd player can't handle .mkv so this will come in handy.

From doing a quick read at videohelp.com, it appears that mkv is just a another container for audio and video, just like avi... So one should be able to use VirtualDubMod to extract and rename the audio and video components...

I'll try that when I get home. :victory:

If that doesn't work, try MKVtoolnix: You can extract the streams with that.

I hate to bump this topic up all the time since it's usually because I have a problem.

Anyway, I tried AutoGK several times and it opens up VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1. After a while, it says "Video compression error: The source image format is not acceptable. (error code -2)" and the avi fails. I wonder if the problem is that it needed to be a "mpg to avi" NOT "mpeg to avi" converter.

Here is the log of what happened if this helps:

I wonder why this is such a difficult process when a program like vob2mpg is such an easy one that doesn't need all these installations and use of different programs that AutoGK does.

MPG and MPEG are the same.

Which compression are you using? xViD or DivX?

Try one or the other to see if it works.[/quote]

That's because different people wrote those programs based on their needs and they can't test every possible scenario that a user encounters.

Your bad luck with software just amazes me.

I thought it was the same, but when I saw that only "mpeg" was listed, I got confused. :(

I was using DivX, so I'll try to use xViD instead.

I think it's half bad luck and half stupidity. :shamefulcry:

Thanks for your help, beem!! :D I tried the xViD instead and it worked! :dancing: Only gripe I have is that it took 1 hour, 12 minutes and 28 seconds, but I guess I can't complain since it did what I wanted it to do. Or maybe I should make it lower quality (I had made it 700 mb for a 45 minute show) so it should hopefully take a shorter time to convert.

Which PC did you run it on?

If you run the program on a faster PC, you'll get faster conversions.
