I'd get a new laptop, cori. Especially if your is about 7 years old. When I took mine in, they suggested I get a new one too, since replacing the LCD would cost $900.
No use fixing up an oldie if you can get a brand new one for a little more money.

I think she was considering replacing her desktop, not her lappy.
Not sure if having two laptops would be a good idea.

Being a Dell, you'd think there would be a label somewhere...
Of course, Dell PCs aren't particularly upgrade-friendly. :grumble:
I'm sure there is a label, but I'm not sure where it is. Probably on the back of the tower?
And that sucks about it not being upgrade friendly. I might ask my brother about this since you're too darn far away to help me out. :(

Eep! I read wrong.
Hmmmm... I guess it would apply to desktops too, tho wouldn't it? I dunno, it's been 10 years since I had a desktop.
Yeah, I was talking about upgrading my desktop. My laptop is about 3 years old and that's what I do the DVD authoring on. Apparently at the crappy rate it's going, I need to upgrade that too. :shamefulcry:

A memory upgrade would probably help your laptop... As well as a disk cleanup and defrag. :victory:
Anyway, I tried converting another drama (hardsubs! <3) and I found out that the episodes are so high quality that 3 eps don't fit on a regular disc, so I was wondering what methods/programs are used to compress the files. Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, but I figured that I'd keep all the related stuff into one thread.
Also, I'm thinking of hardsubbing dramas myself since I don't want to waste any more time with bad encodings. This'll take me forever.

ConvertXtoDVD can't do it?
I suppose you can only compress a file through encoding only so much: eventually you'll have to sacrifice something, either disc space or quality...

I've never come across this, but if that were the case i'd just put 2 eps on a disc. They are cheap, after all ;)
BTW ConvertX should be able to cope with high quality originals: I thought it would just adjust the quality accordingly?
Anime Dad wrote:They must be very high quality then
Maybe.
I've seen D-Addicts posting up torrents for HD J-Dramas at 1280x768 resolution, as opposed to the more typical 704x396... That's about 3-1/2 times the amount of pixel data.

Nope, she's using ConvertX... Albeit an older version.
Really? Than mebbe it's the older version. Like A-Oyaji, I have no problems saving loads on just one disc. The program adjusts the quality and size for you...

As I mentioned earlier, it depends on what you're converting...
bmwracer wrote:

Yeah, it could be because I have an old version that it didn't convert the files to fit a standard DVD disc. Damn, I wish I knew this earlier. :(

What are you trying to convert to DVD, cori-chan?
They are .avi files.
I'm so useless to finding things on the internet, so if someone could direct me to an (*ahem*) inexpensive version of ConvertX, I would really appreciate it. :)
Ack, I meant what avi files specifically... :bonk:

Did you ever take a look at those free alternatives that I posted a while ago... They might be as good or better than ConvertX... But you have to try 'em out.

I didn't know there was more than one type of avi file. How do I find out what I have?

I'm used to ConvertX though. I also forgot which programs you posted and I'm too lazy to search through all the pages to find them.
Which reminds me--maybe it be more convenient if the first post could be edited with all the programs used to create authored DVDs to make it easy to find instead of having to search mindlessly through pages upon pages for what you're looking for. Just a suggestion, but hopefully something can be done. (Maybe I should take this to the "suggestions" thread.)
