I will work on this tonight.

how much japanese do you know, before going on your trip??
i didn't know too much, just a few basic words to get me somewhat by, but i definitely needed to carry that phrase book, or it would be ultimate confusion for me and i would have to use sign language, which just wouldn't help very much. Fortunately, some of the japanese spoke some english, but i would say most probably don't know enough to communicate well with the americans, so some courage to speak japanese and a phrase book would help greatly on a vacation to japan.
I plan on taking a japanese course hopefully. :bonk:

man subaru, after going back and reading all the plights you had with your trip, it was so funny, as in "can this really happen to a guy for real?" kind of funny (not that you feel the same way)...

so you tried calling Narita Airport, but audio was messed up? that's weird, did you try calling from a phone card, what sorta questions did you have for them?
I do think it is very possible to even find time to relax in Japan, Tokyo area. Even on the JR-train to Shinjuku or Shibuya on the Yamanote line. Just being in Japan is nice. I think better yet if you want to really relax, go to Hakone or parts of Kyoto, away from the big cities of Shinjuku, Tokyo. Yes there is people that always seem like in a hurry in Japan, but you still can find time to relax, esp. if you are on vacation and trying to sightsee, trying not to get too lost. If you are hungry, go to a good curry or ramen place, sit down, get some nice Kirin/Sapporo beer or Sake, and enjoy!, that is for relaxing times. :applaud: :bonk:

(i never heard of benjo, but) in addition to niko's explanation: usually they say 'toire' as mentioned, a more traditional way would be 'o-te-arai' which is litterally the place to wash your hands... translatable as 'bathroom/restroom/lavatory'

Folks, benjo is the old informal (ie, like from 1940s or older) way of saying bathroom, and you'd only use that with family members.

The proper way to say it now is otearai.

Heh I just called this place on my voip phone... I dunno if I was breaking up on her end or she could not understand me..

I asked a stupid question which I found was on the site.. for some reason the Number 03-5321-3077 would not work for me.. so I had to call 81-3-5321-3077

Here is the audio clip.. Mind my computer telling the time :hehe:

Oh Doh!

03 is not the Calling code for Japan 81 is lol stupid mistake!

lol I sound like a female.. I had to bend over.. I was using headphone Beacuse if I used the built in speaker, she would echo and hear her ownself and that would really confuse her, so I used headphones and could hardly hear her.

Yup, 81 is the country code for Japan. Remember to drop the preceding zero in the city code (03 is Tokyo, 06 is Osaka). That is, you would dial 81-3-number and not 81-03-number.
22 Jun 2005, 15:45 #1412
really? I did not know that.. I never had a problem with adding the "0" infront of the 3..
22 Jun 2005, 15:47 #1413
Hmm, I've been told to ignore any preceding 0. Maybe it does work but adds an extra digit to dial. :headscratch:

i'll keep that in mind...thanks :hehe:
Suntory makes a lot of products, not just the tea, so in hawaii you guys have a lot of that good stuff eh? lots of japanese and japanese products, i remember last year in Oahu, on my last trip, there were all these japanese people, and a few cute j-girls, almost felt like japan, sorta of. :bonk:

Yup. It sure feels like little-Japan there. I can't think of another place where menus are available in Japanese in nearly every restaurant.

yeah, a lot of things in oahu cater to the japanese people, so it felt like a mini-japan while i was there. They had ramen places like they do in japan, i didn't try any in Oahu, my guess is that they are probably very good.
here in SoCal, they have a big japanese population in OC and in Torrance/Gardena/LA area, so getting good japanese food is not a problem here.

@BMW,

was going to ask you since you from that area,

wanted to go to Asahiya in Torrance, what are the two major cross streets? from the 405 going northbound from OC. I wanted to check out that bookstore, is it any good?

how about Bookoff store, i know they have one in LA? do you know where it's at? any good there?
Thanks,
q
