only a day in Tokyo?!?, that is almost like my day and half in Kyoto, but Tokyo is so much larger....hmmmm
you mention Harajuku, went there, didn't see the cosplay cause i didn't go to the correct street in harajuku, did see a few or so cosplay girls in Gothic lolita outfits. ask the others about harajuku areas.

Asakusa Sensoji Temple, Shinjuku downtown area, Shibuya area, Ginza, Roppongi, Akihabara, you probably would narrow it down, for one full day, probably to two or three areas that i mentioned. Track on a map, which areas you would like to visit in that short amount of time in Tokyo,
i would suggest using the the JR-Yamanote line, since it covers most of those cities i mentioned, it covers a circular area. Good luck.

sorry for writing it in a confusing way... it will be my only sunday, not my only day. I will arrive in Tokyo 6.00 am, and leave next saturday at noon, so plenty of time. Its just that I want to make good use of the Sunday cause I thought there might be special 'events' on sunday only.

Sensouji should be very close to my hotel, since I'm on a 3 minute walk from Asakusabashi station... anyway thanks for helping me! I hope someone knows more about Harajuku. I have a lonely planet guide so ill read that in the meanwhile..

thanks :D

sunday thru saturday....much better, you have lots of time to see Tokyo.
well the more time the better really, but almost a week is good.

Sunday, definitely use this time to check out Harajuku, I was told that i was very close to seeing the many cosplayers out there, but it was near the station, forgot the street name, ok....reading off of my tokyo lonely planet book...says Omote-sando is best on a Sunday, when the street is closed to the traffic, i believe this is the area you might want to be, it is where the cosplayers are at, just check it out in your book, should say a thing or two about it, unfortunately, i was off a few streets, but did manage to take a few pix of some gothic lolita j-girls.
I am not sure how early you are going to start your Sunday, but probably go to Harajuku first, grab some good coffee and pastry there, take a lot of pix of cosplayers, then hop on the train and visit a few other places.

suggestions:
Ginza, walk around, lots of window shopping, and nice big stores in the downtown area, visit the Sony building, i did twice on both my trips to japan, you can find it off your map maybe in your lonely planet or other tour book.
Roponggi: I didn't see too much, but you could visit a few places, i only saw HardRock cafe twice, bought some t-shirts and walk around the surrounding areas, that's it. there is more, like clubbing at night, but keep in mind the trains close down around 12 or so, ask around what time it closes, you don't want to get stuck and have to pay so much more yen for a cab.
Shinjuku: I visited Isetan, one reason only, the underground food market on the basement floor. I post a few pix on this thread, check it out and you will see a glimpse of j-market heaven. Also visit KinoKuniya bookstore, there are two of them within a block away from each other, i have seen both ones, the old one and the newer one. i am sure there is a lot more to see in Shinjuku, look over your book for more info, i am sure you can find more on it.
23 Jul 2005, 16:31 #1647
a continuation, didn't want to make it overwhelming for one post...
also keep in mind that Isetan and others like it, are huge shopping centers many floors, and they have food markets you have to visit on the basement floor. Isetan is in Shinjuku downtown, and the food market closes at 8pm, i believe.

Shibuya:
I visited the HMV building, there is a lot to see here, i heard there is a big row of Love Hotels that i didn't get a chance to see, it is off this one street called ?? Dogzenka or something like that, again, look in your book for more info. I also was overly curious about the cute J-girls, and had to check out the 7 plus floors of Shibuya109 building, right near the shibuya station. it felt like a night club in there. I only took a few j-girl pix as i was a bit embarassed and didn't want to embarass the pretty hot j-girls, but did ask a few for their pix. Also, visit the Hachiko dog statue, right infront of the shibuya train station. Gotta love their huge video screens and crowded area, also noticed the hot jgirls everywhere!!!
Akihabara: If you are into anime a little or a lot like me, and even an Otaku like i am, you have to see this place and give yourself a good part of the day, that is how long it will take, an anime shoppers paradise here, ask around if you happen to get lost, and you might, cause i was lookin for certain places in particular. But you will find your way around, tons and tons of anime/j-idol shops everywhere! it is near and around the station, the main anime shopping area is off this one street, you can't miss it. also home to electronics stuff.
Shinagawa a central trainstation and also where i stayed for almost a week, at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel, a nice place to stay, and the train station is a big one, also has the Shinkasen's here. other than that, i don't know what else there is to see here.
Nakano again, only if you are interested in going to the Nakano Broadway Mall, and are curious or into anime/J-idol stuff like i am, a mall that has four levels, and tons of stuff for the otaku like me. You will see it from the train station, Nakano broadway mall, enter it, walk thru straight ahead and finally you will see the actual nakano broadway mall, enter it and check out the first two floors especially, third level if you have time.
as far as visiting places,
you are staying close to Asakusa, so Sensoji temple, Imperial Palace, maybe visit the Tsujuki(spelling) fish market, look in your book for that one.
if you have any questions regarding tokyo, send me a "pm", not much else i can add here. If you are very much into j-idols/anime, let me know, if not, then maybe you can skip on nakano and visit elsewhere in tokyo. enjoy you visit to Tokyo, stay mainly on the Yamanote line as it is the easiest to get around. The screen inside the train is in english and shows the destination time. You will have to change a few trains to get to Roponggi, Nakano, and other places. Shinjuku, Shinagawa, Shibuya, all are on the Yamanote line. Good luck. :bonk:

Those bentou boxes look pretty sweet, thanks for the pixs guys.

Got a friend coming with me who's video game mad / techno geek. He's looking for a cheap JPN PS hand held and DS. I think I'll probably do a runner whilst he's looking and go off hunting for all things Ueto-chan and Shibasaki-chan!

Definately looking forward to picking up some super cool novelty items!

thanks for wishing me fun.. im having :)

i just got in tokyo and im now at the youth hostel. I visited harajuku and shibuya... there werent that many cosplay girls, though it was sunday... but the picture i had in my had might have been wrong. Btw, i should have known there were two 109 buildings.. it confused me quite a bit... but i dont get it... one building is like only girls clothes, and the other says 'kids' everywhere... so i didnt go in the kids one and went into the first building, but i found out it wasnt really a place for me to be, since why would a guy walk around in a building with only girl clothes, if it wasnt for peeping on girls... so, in order not to look like a perv, i went out...

too bad

anyway, i didnt feel the earth quake, it was just 1 day before i came to tokyo, but ive already spoken people that felt it... it was quite big, but from several sources ive heard it was around 4 on richter scale.

yeah, i didn't see that many cosplay girlies either....hmmmm oh well, hopefully you got in some pix in harajuku. Yeah, there is 2 shibuya 109 buildings, and went in the one the first one, felt like a nightclub, lots of music and lots of hot cute girls. actually went up to the top floor(there are some restarants on the top floor), then came back down, it was interesting, but skipped the other building. Read that the other one has the official Morning Musume Hello Project store in the basement floor, not sure if you are into those j-idols. Men were sitting in front of the first b.109, and taking pix of the girls, interesting, but also didn't want to look like a peeping tom. Did you visit the HMV building? a nice music multi-level store in Shibuya. I am sure they have lots more there in Shibuya, but didn't want to stay in one place for too long.
How is the youth Hostel? i am sure it is more affordable to stay, but i passed on it, since it has a curfew and the lack of privacy. The eq. was measured, i think....6.0 on the richter scale, so i heard. I think it was in Chiba area, but if they say it was quite big, not sure if it was only a 4.0, cause we sometimes get them here in Cal., just last month, we had a 4.0 eq. felt that one.
what else are you going to visit in Tokyo? saw your pix, did you post any new ones from harajuku/shibuya? have fun. :bonk:

Hmm ure probably right about the strength of the Eq, since a number of 10s people died actually. I dont know much about it...
The youth hostel is pretty good... its cheap and the beds and showers are okay. Theres no breakfast or evening meal so you have to get that outdoors, but i dont mind (i think). I didnt post anything on my blog about tokyo yet... the internet is not so fast, so its a bit difficult. I will try to do that tonight.
oh btw, i dont care so much about privacy anymore, since ive been in a hostfamily for 2 weeks, and i couldnt do much on my own there.. so im used to it now.. i dont know actually why id need privacy anymore.

well got to go again.. today ill visit akihabara electric city, ginza - sony building, the godzilla statue, and some parks there. if i have time left ill figure something out with my guidebook. cya!

heading out to Akihabara? cool, wouldn't mind going back....soon.
well, by the time you read this, probably back from there. Did you see some of the anime stores there?, like Animate or Softmap or K-Books? There is even a manga cafe where j-girls in Maid outfits serve on you at Cafe Malish, heard about it, but didn't get a chance to go in Akihabara.
yeah, that sounds like a full full day you got there. I spent most of my day at Akihabara, and if you are an Otaku like i am and into Anime/J-Idol stuff as much as i am, you can easily spend lots of time and money there. Which parks did you go to, Sony building in Ginza, yeah it was ok, multi-level. Anyways, a pix that i took while sitting infront of Shibuya109, look familiar? :hehe:
