I don't buy that at all. :shakehead:

Even when Juri-chan says her own name, it doesn't sound anything like "Julie."

Apparently us Westerners hear the words differently than you guys in the East...

Try listening to Oda Yuji calling Ohtake Shinobu's character's name, Rie, in Joudan Ja Nai!. It sounded more 'Li...ae' than 'Re...ae'.

Juri-sama is a Kansai girl, and her pronunciation slips back to her native dialect from time to time.

I can't claim to speak Japanese with any kind of proficiency but I did join a beginner's course for 3 months. I think I've got the pronunciations of the individual characters right, even if I can't string together a sentence to say my life.

If you download and watch Kagayaku Onna - Ueno Juri, you'll hear her say her name numerous times...

Though the Brits initially think she's saying "Julie..." :puppydog:

EDIT: I'm watching the video now and the narrator says "Juri," and "Rondon" (London).... And Juri-chan says "Buristoru" (Bristol)... :beaten:

The Pimsleur CD course i'm doing has numerous words that have what sounds like an "l" in them, but that obviously are written with "r" sound - such as tokoro (place) which often sounds like "tokolo", especially when spoken quickly in a sentence.

So desu.

I think it's our (my?) Western hearing.... :beaten:

Anyways, a screencap from the aformentioned video:

That's right, that's right...Juri always pronounced her name as Joori...no "L"...as for London, the pronunciation I was hearing was "Lawndawn", which was exactly the pronunciation used frequently in PGSM...

That was a funny moment...Juri asked some Brit on the street his name, and he said "Uh..Matt", and she repeated "Uhmatt"...

That was a sweet moment for her (even though she spoke English to order her train tickets earlier)...she must've felt she spoke Eigo truly for the first time...

Would you believe I just bought a pirated copy of Rainbow Song?! Those pirate have taste! :bonk:

BTW it will not diminish Juri-sama's revenue from the movie - I won't be canceling my order from Amazon on the official DVD of this movie.

ermm like what anime dad posted, my japanese teacher said the pronunciation for 'R' is somewhere between 'L' and 'R'. similarly, for 'F' it's somewhere between 'F' and 'H'.
