Okay, to be perfectly honest, it wasn't as good as I had anticipated. For the amount of time they had to build up the storyline (over 4 hours of video), there really wasn't much substance there other than the Nodame / Chiaki's final payoff.

Otherwise, the 'character development' was left only for those who had already seen the series. By the time the special itself was over, there were so many loose ends needed to be tied up that some of them were even never resolved. Everyone had their 15-20 seconds of airtime (except for our favorite Contrabass player...damnit...), but otherwise it felt less like a story and more like a forced throw-in.

4 hours is equivalent to almost 5 episodes of a regular series, and a lot of series out there can pull off full series in around 7 (Papa to Musume is one I can think of right away). While I still enjoyed the sight gags and the overall story premise, it almost felt like they could've done the same thing in a single night and edited out all of the pointless banter (hell, Streusseman was practically unnecessary other than splitting up Nodame & Chiaki).

Do I want another season of Nodame? You bet, but the quality of the first season compared to this special reminded me of such series as...well, to go American for a second, Heroes. The first season was spectacular, the second was left to be desired.

Sorry bmw, I WANT to say that it was the best thing ever...but not looking at it through rose tinted glasses, there were so many flaws it's hard to ignore. :(.

Spoiler — click to revealWith regards to that, I think the SPs followed the manga more closely than the series did. The Stressman issue was necessary to pull that trigger off the rather important bridge fight. But, I do agree while I do think it's good, it's not as spectacular as the original series. and I think the inclusion of the ocassional R&S bunch was while touching, not so important. I'd prefer if they had stuck to the manga even further.

The fact that the story ends loosely coudl lead to another set of SPs but it would be very difficult. I would honestly like to see Chiaki work in Roux-Marlet though. It would be enjoyable to watch.

Spoiler — click to revealI guess I should start buying the manga and see for myself how sell the live action tracks it... :)

Of everything I've seen, I think the bits and pieces of the Rising Star bunch after graduation was really unnecessary and almost pointless aside from showing familiar faces...

All in all, I still enjoyed the SP, particularly the romantic tension between Nodame and Chiaki... That's always been one of the big selling points of the drama, IMO. :)

Nodame's French was meant to be strange - I don't think "Help! I've been raped!" is an everyday kind of phrase used in France. Chiaki's French was a bit disappointing, certainly not as convincing as his German.
