| 1. | Intriguing drama about controversial subjects [Rating: 9/10] While watching this show, I can't help but feel that the writer is trying to educate us the viewers about some of the unspoken ills that plague schools and society today. Perhaps that's why the title of the show is "Watashitachi no kyokasho".
This is not a feel-good school drama like GTO, nor is it a school comedy like Nobuta. Perhaps it's a bit similar to Jyoou no Kyoushitsu, in that both dramas try to educate the viewer about the education system, but the subject matter and the approach to it are rather different between the two shows. The main themes in this show include school bullying, student suicide, alienation between teachers and students, parental negligence and the fight for the often inconvenient truth. What's intriguing about this show is that it doesn't try to present simple truths to the viewers, but everything and everyone in the show seem to have a hidden side, so it's not easy to tell who's good or bad, and what's right or wrong. It serves to keep the viewer guessing and thus wanting to find out more about the show.
The cast is generally excellent, with the usual brilliant and abrasive acting by Kanno Miho as a combative lawyer and negligent but remorseful step-mother, Itoh Atsushi (Densha Otoko) as the awkward but honest new teacher, Shida Mirai as the ill-fated bullied student, and surprisingly captivating performance by Maki Yoko as the seemingly uptight veteran teacher.
At times, this show feels like a whodunit mystery, with constant surprising plot twists. This, on top of the excellent cast, will make sure that I'll keep watching until the end.
P.S. even though this show is about the Japanese school system and aimed at a Japanese audience, in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shooting incident and the fact that bullying seems to be one of the root causes, perhaps the subject matter here will be of relevance to the American audience as well... | Reviewed by Ming on 11 May 2007 | 2. | twists and turns. [Rating: 9/10] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IT>
really good drama... umm for the people that are saying are slow ignore 'em... they're crazy. i would say it's a little slow. like slow/boring to me was maou, arifureta kiseki, propose daisakusen, joou no kyoushitsu, bloody monday (good twists though), 1liter of tears, 14 sai, denshaotoko, kekkondekinai .
the story's well done and I was also dying for more. It made me want to watch the next ep which most dramas don't do. acting's good so is the background music. I love the concerto and the symphony song they picked, very effective and i never got sick of 'em . imo, it's a lot better than proposeal daisakusen (it won best drama that season) which I can describe as one big frustration, weak story, weak character, etc.
this DID win best scriptwriter and BEST ACTRESS. | Reviewed by howtwosave on 1 August 2009 | 3. | Good job [Rating: 9/10] This is probably my favorite japanese drama of the last couple
years. From what I have read recently, its topic, bullying, is
very timely in Japan. It does a great job of ending most episodes with a bit of a cliffhanger that keeps you coming back (I watched all 12
episodes in two days).
The story takes alot of interesting twists,
probably a few too many in fact - it would have been better with
two or three fewer episodes and the final scene in the teacher's room was a bit much. However, with the usual terrific performance by Miho Kanno I can't complain. | Reviewed by johnjeon on 21 July 2007 | 4. | Watching [Rating: ?/10] Will write review when the series end. | Reviewed by 8thSin on 14 April 2007 |

Last year there were a series of suicides connected with bullying among students in Japan and this is in response to that current issue. In 2006 there were 608 suicides of Japanese under the age of 20...71 of those were known to be connected with bullying...they think that this number is low....
Kanno Miho does a good job as a lawyer who tries to discloses that there is "bullying" at her daughter's mid-school...This drama plus the drama LIFE will probably represent the type of future dramas
addressing the issue of bullying unlike some high school dramas of the past which depicts the bullies as heroes.... | 2. | Comments by Jeanxi [Rating: 7/10] This is the first time I've seen Kanno Miho as a lead, and I must say, I am immensely impressed. I don't think this drama would've been nearly as good if it wasn't for Kanno holding up the show. The supporting actor was also really good, of course (I forgot his name, the teacher guy), and so was the supporting actress who played the principal. The story was great for the first two or three episodes, but it seemed to go downhill from there. The plot became very dragged out, and I think at episode 6 I was already screaming for it to end. Thankfully, the ending was shocking enough to redeem the drama overall. Interesting ending song by Bonnie Pink. | 3. | Comments by Cerebus [Rating: 6/10] A school/courtroom/mystery dorama which is a real Curate's egg, good and bad in parts. It works best when dealing with Kanno Miho's personal relationships (I wish they spent more time on these) and the mystery plot which is less full of holes and not as implausible as most Japanese TV mysteries. The worst part is Itoh Atsushi, a truely rotten actor playing a truely annoying character, but he is what the fast forward button was invented for. It's also full of incredible long and incredibly dull monologues, and the sub plot involving the head mistress' son is plain dumb, but on the whole it kept me watching, just. | 4. | Comments by SayaOtonashi [Rating: 7/10] I enjoyed watching this dorama; at first I thought it was another school dorama but it wasn't really, and you can finally understand why the title is 'our textbook'. It is a textbook teachers and society should have; the show is highly critical and talks about hatred, greed, kindness... Tanihara Shosuke's character was so prepotent that I just disliked him, but I've seen him in other doramas and films and he's just great. Atsushi Itoh was also OK but I don't really liked him; I just see Densha Otoko :D Good different show; give it a try. | 5. | Comments by poopiefish [Rating: 8/10] Drama about school bullying... perhaps due to the fact that I haven't witnessed/experienced bullying in school before, it didn't leave too much of an impression on me, despite the interesting storyline. The structure of the plot was amazing though... it keeps you guessing and it always catches you off-guard.
I have a feeling that the drama was intended to explore the blurry line between "right" and "wrong"... the plot conveyed it well, but somehow it's missing something that really touches your heart. | 6. | Comments by aoi_dolphine [Rating: 8/10] This drama is not as gloomy as I thought it is. Yes it's protraying the school life of a girl who has been bullied by her classmates. Although it's a theme on bullying, the scenes are all moderated in a way. How should I put it... it's thought provoking in a subtle way I guess. Questions are raised with rational answers but than the ending... left one wonders alot. Interesting drama to watch if you are the type who wants to think and feel the thoughts of the characters as you watch. | 7. | Comments by Nermal [Rating: 8/10] Turned out better than expected! Thumbs up to Kanno Miho for a great job! ^^
The story revolves around the death of a young girl which is presumed to have been cause by bullying in school. Her former step mother (Miho) and also lawyer decides to take on the case and drag the school down.
Unexpected ending! Great cast of young actors mixed with excellent actors. Brought me to tears a few times! | 8. | Comments by Scarlett [Rating: 5/10] I'm giving this series a rating of 5 because I'm just entering into the 3 disc. No quite impressed with the opening but this series somehow offers engagement as you watch it and the song is good.
This series speaks for the current social issues in Japan and the discplinary problem posed by the students. Brillian acting from Miho Kanno that won her the best actress award for this performance. | 9. | Comments by aik0 [Rating: 6/10] A high school girl committed suicide at school. The school would like the incident to be an accident. But the girl's mother, who abandoned her and is a lawyer, and the girl's class teacher believe that the girl's death was a result of bullying in school. Nice pace, nice acting and interesting story so far. Been draggy lately | 10. | Comments by atheon [Rating: 8/10] July 2007: Someone recommended this drama to me, and I'm glad that I picked this up. Something different from all those school based drama, and of course darker, heavier. Kanno Miho's acting is superb! The ending was abit unexpected, and I thought it should be more shocking. Expected too much =x | 11. | Comments by Ezalor [Rating: 8/10] One of the best worked out, most unpredictable and most interesting storylines i've ever seen. Beautiful character development, all in all very good actors. But it lacks sometimes a resolute progress; the story lasts too long at certain points. Gets more and more thrilling up to the end. | 12. | Comments by xxhiroxx [Rating: 9/10] An extremely engaging drama with a spectacular storyline that discusses a current problem in the society as well as the dark side of the education system. Story telling is engaging, with well-placed cliffhangers and plot twisters that keeps you on the edge of your seat. | 13. | Comments by aramia [Rating: 10/10] One of the best drama I'd watched. kanno miho is astoundingly beautiful and her acting is great here. The suspense and twists are unpredictable and some of the parts were really touching. In the end all the villians are not really villians. This gets 2 thumbs up! | 14. | Comments by Lee-chan [Rating: 8/10] A gloomy account of bullying from the perspective of adults. It was dramatic without becoming too cheesy, and very easy to get hooked on. Kan'no carried this one, giving what might be one of my favorite performances in a drama I've seen yet. | 15. | Comments by outlaws0025 [Rating: 4/10] sorry to say this, but this is one of the worst doramas I've ever seen. Watched around 50 doramas in total and 4 is the lowest score I've ever given. The story was very boring and the acting under average. | 16. | Comments by dreamer10231 [Rating: ?/10] it's because of tanihara...lol so far, i've stopped watching this because i find the mother's really really mean...but i think i'm gonna continue this | 17. | Comments by Bbbut [Rating: 4/10] quite bad - draggingly slow pace and horrible male main character (insultingly stupid with a speech impediment), gets better in the last 2 episodes | 18. | Comments by ct_subang [Rating: 4/10] never thot this drama wld be soo intensed...wasn't this a drama abt bullied??dreadful but i managed to stayed on watching it to the end...kekkeke | 19. | Comments by Sleepingstar [Rating: 7/10] Kinda serious dorama. Some problems for sure, but maybe still more good than bad in this one. Also really liked Kanno Miho's performance here. | 20. | Comments by loveaomori [Rating: 7/10] the firsts episodes are interesting but I'm pretty disapointed with the ending. Too much twists to keep the viewer focus into it. | 21. | Comments by gaijinmark [Rating: 8/10] Great drama!! A bit long, they could have shaved it down to 11 episodes and not lost anything. Kanno was at her best!! | 22. | Comments by baqjames [Rating: 9/10] I admired this drama. it touched the dark of society vividly. This issue was usually ignored by most of the adults. | 23. | Comments by x_XJules [Rating: 5/10] Touching at times, really cheesy and stupid at times... kind of entertaining. ending is a tiny bit disappointing. | 24. | Comments by jessiesoon [Rating: 7/10] interesting...
