I really tried as well, read some of the in game books, built my character, did quests etc. I think I got to the Blade headquarters up in the mountains when I stopped playing.
The wilderness feels so lifeless and small, and up until where I played the story was a bit weak. Does it pick up or something? I want to know because I don't want to just give up on the game completely.
It picks up as long as you stay on the main storyline. Oblivion isn't for everyone...if especially if you really like Japanese storytelling, this probably won't be your cup of tea. The Elder Scrolls have always been a sandbox rpg, less about story, and more about exploring and what you want to do with your character.
