DALLAS - Dell Inc. said Monday it will recall 4.1 million notebook computer batteries because they can overheat and catch fire. Dell negotiated conditions of the recall with the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission, which called it the largest electronics-related recall ever conducted by the agency.

A Dell spokesman said the batteries were made by Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). and placed in notebooks that were shipped between April 1, 2004, and July 18 of this year.

"In rare cases, a short-circuit could cause the battery to overheat, causing a risk of smoke and/or fire," said the spokesman, Ira Williams. "It happens in rare cases, but we opted to take this broad action immediately."

I saw a few pictures of one last week, I think. The worst place for a laptop to into a spontaneous combustion: a Japanese press conference.

Yeah, that was the original reason for the investigation which resulted in the recalls now.

still that's pretty  I remember when my HD died, (PCB fried) it heard a "poof" sound and saw small cloud of smoke coming out of my tower  nothing like this thankfully :nut:

Had some smoke too, but with 3 power supplies. The rest of the PC was fine. :)

Start your BitTorrent engines, boys and girls, for Hitachi is planning to release a one-terabyte hard drive by the end of the year. The hard drives will be of the standard 3.5-inch size and will make their way into PCs and home servers. One terabyte of storage is plenty, methinks, but since high definition video takes up an awful lot of space, having a terabyte (or two) of space available will become more and more necessary.

Company reps haven't even so much as hazarded a guess as to how much this sepulcher will cost. – Nicholas Deleon
