Anyone know the difference between a Intel Pentium D, and a Intel Core 2 duo? Which one is better?

Wikipedia to the rescue:

Pentium D: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_d

Thnx for the links. I actually skimmed through them already....but I don't always rely on Wikipedia. I just wanted to know from users actual opinion of the CPUs.

Not sure how many people here have either CPU... I'm still running a three year old Athlon XP 2600.

Why did you go with Athlon, instead of an Intel CPU???

I'm anti-Intel.... I like the underdog, AMD.

Anti-Intel....why? Bad experiences? I never used AMD. So I don't know much about it. You used both, I am assuming. What's the difference?

I don' mean to annoy you with so many questions, but I'm interested in computers. I wanna learn how to build my own. I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Intel's the big boy on the block and they've been trying to push out AMD, so I like rooting for the little guy, that's all. :)

Almost all of the PCs we use here at work are Pentium-based only because we buy Dells... My home PC is an AMD because it's less expensive than a comparable Pentium 4...

I've built and rebuilt my home PC several times now and it's not too difficult.... It's a little daunting the first time, but as long as you're careful, nothing catastrophic will happen... Doing a lot of reading helps, but having the hands on experience is the best. :)

I think it helps to have another working PC available just in case you have a problem or need drivers, etc.

Good luck.

Doesn't mean much unless you're using programs that are CPU-intensive.

Word/Excel/Access and the internet aren't gonna be significantly faster with a C2D than a 1GHz P4, ne? :beaten:

If anything, you should at least bump up your RAM to 512MB or even 1GB.

512MB max????

That's hard to believe... But yeah, it's not worth bumping the memory, especially if you're gonna build up a new one.

I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon, since I don't game... I just edit videos and hardsub/author J-Dramas and my Athlon XP 2600 seems to do just fine...

Had the weirdest thing happen the other day: I have a program called Human Japanese, which was installed on my previous computer. As it totally died, I decided to install it on my current comp. But when I put the CD rom into my DVD drive, it would not autoplay to install, so I used Windows Explorer to check it out - and the disc was not being recognised by the DVD drive. My comp only has the one drive, so I was stuffed. I took the disc to work today, and my work comp recognised the disc immediately.... huh? WTF?

Anyhow, i've made a copy of the disc and i'm going to try it tonight. I've never had a problem with the drive before, and it seems to recognise other discs OK....

Is the CD rom the original copy of the program or is it one that you used to burn the program?

I suggest that you extract the program to your hard drive and then burn it as a data CD. <---- of course you will have to do this at work. Since you can't do it at home.

Then at home, open the CD. Extract the program to you hard drive, or directly install the program off the CD. <--- Your choice! It should work this way.

Often time certain CD, can't be read by a DVD drive, because it just doesn't support the type, because it is a DVD drive. Some DVD players play certain CDs that another won't. That depends on the drive.

I hope this was somewhat helpful! I hate having computer problems too! :shakehead:
