Well, I'm having some problems with one of my external HDs. I have one that is a WD 250 GB, which is attached as a USB and a WD 1 TB that is connected through firewire. I'm having problems with this one. Sometimes when I start my comp, it doesn't read that I have the 1 TB attached, or the I TB will automatically disconnect. Anyone have any advice? or solutions?

First thing to do would be to verify of the cable is good or not... Is it an intermittent problem?

While using it, like if I'm watching a drama from that HD then it runs smoothly. It doesn't just crash, or stop and then start up. It is random though though in terms of connecting to it when the computer starts up. :grumble:

Fortunately I was able to recover with apparently no data loss...
Time to run a full disc check, defrag, and then back up. :fingerscrossed:
Turns out my mains HD was okay, but my second HD forgot what files were on it... So I spent most of the weekend trying to recover the data on it (dramas, subs, etc.)... After all that attempted recovery stuff, I found an easy but risky fix: it appears that the HD forgot what type of file system it was (NTFS), so I re-wrote the sector with that NTFS info and it worked so I'm okay again... Time to back everything up, I'd say.
I guess the reason why the drive tanked was that it was so fragmented from the writing and deleting of dramas and subs over the months...
Lessons learned: back up and defragment regularly.

Great hearing that you were able to solve the problem. Computer problems are my worst nightmare. This reminds me, using the Disk Defragmenter now is probably a wise idea.

:victory:
I hear that Vista automatically defragments on a regular basis.

LOL.
I've seen pictures of really old mice that had two sets of vertical and horizontal wheels rather than the ubiquitous dust-collecting ball that recent mice use... :beaten:
