So no wine for you at all dochira?

I'll drink it, but I'm not a wine connoisseur.

Bingo. Otherwise you may end up with bits of cork in the wine. I guess living near the Napa wine country has its advantages....that is, if I drank wine.

Ahhh.. thats what that black stuff is in my mead wine..

The wine as been sitting for at least 5 years standing up..

It's almost gone now but I think I'm going to pour the rest in a glass to check it.

Cabs are nice! So the corks won't dry out. Although some of these wines now have plastic corks. Also try to store in a cool dry spot.

Is it bitter? It seems to have a strong taste, as I could smell it on my cousins breath last night.

I like Pinot Noir best of all the reds. Merlot is my 2nd fave. I tried Shiraz recently and found the taste to be a tad bit bitter. Don't remember the brand. I am not familiar with Gertz. I'll have to check that out the next time I stroll the wine aisles. And Port is strictly an after dinner drink. isn't it? I tried an Argentian Malbec/ Mendoza combo and that was good. Ravenswood or Smoking Loon makes decent Cabs.

my bad, Gertz = Gewürztraminer

I find that Cabs are more bitter than a Shiraz, i do like the St Francis Cab, it's quite yummy.

right now i've been trying Australian shirazes, they go well with grilled foods.

my usual glass is a 20 yr Tawny Port from Taylor Fladgate, goes very good with my beloved cigars. I usually give vintage ports as birth gifts.. by the time the child graduates, the port will be perfectly aged.

Yes red wines have a heartier or more robust tastes than white wines.

As dochira said I am no expert, but I drink red wines mostly from time to time. I would say that red wines are a developed taste. I am going to take an educated guess and say that I am older than most of you on this message board, except maybe for Geezer. When I was younger I liked sweeter or lighter more sparkling drinks. Now I enjoy red wines when I go out to dinner. I also enjoy a good cup or glass of sake on occasion. ;)

Thanks krim for your responses. I'll have to give Shiraz another try. And I wrote down the name of the St Francis Cab to try also.

Oooh so you are a cigar man. No wonder you love your Tawny Port. Nice gift idea!

BTW I posted above Subaru 'thinking too much' post to answer qilver's red wine comments. :)

yeah, i gave my nephews each a bottle from the 2000 Vintage, they'll be ready 2020'ish... hopefully they store the properly.

i have a Vintage from the 80's i just about ready to pop, Im thinking for NYE if nothing.. ill have to drink it soon, i considered selling it off (worth about $150-200'ish) ... but it has seepage, not sure about the cork condition. :grumble: I hope i can remove it without it disintegrating.

ps, if you have a trader joes near you, the Charles shaw Shiraz is actually pretty good.
