I think so.. it's a Duty Free Bottle so she must of picked it up when she went to France whenever that was, I never bothered to ask, she might get curious of why i'm asking about the wine.

You have to be careful with some wines....they'll turn into vinegar. :bleh:

By smell? No clue. But your tongue will let you know.

Well I'm not opening the bottle.

Smell plays a huge factor in taste.

You can get a vague idea of how the wine may taste by smelling it.
Hence, those wine tasting testers who always smell the drink a great deal before actually drinking it.

I always smell it before I drink it, you can tell if it's going to be sweet or bitter.

Yep. Without smell, we wouldn't be able to enjoy the food as much as we do now.

You mean put a syringe through the cork krim and withdraw some of the wine to see if its gone bad or not? Never tried that. I guess my bottles are not that old. :)

I do know that some wines even the new ones need to breathe after you open the bottle and before you pour a glass. Sometimes up to an hour. Not sure exactly how it works but it can make them taste much better. I know this applies to red wines, not sure about white ones.

Yeah, use the syringe to draw some out to test. I think the major (collectible vinters do the same to old old bottles, though they inject some of the same back)

i dont usually let my whites breathe.
depending on the vintage, i'd let my reds breathe at least 15 minutes in a large party setting. It's easier to let it sit if a smaller gathering and there are less people waiting and wondering where the wine is. Sometimes, ill forget about the bottle when im grilling, and i wont remember til were almost done. :hehe:

Thanks krim for that info. Very interesting. You can tell I don't entertain all that much. :hehe: But I do know enjoy a glass of red wine when out with friends from time to time. Earlier this year I even tried a nice bottle of Chianti while at an Italian restaurant with a friend and I was surprised how much I liked it. My image of Chianti is those bottles with the straw on the bottom that my Dad used to enjoy with most of his meals. Then when the wine was gone the bottle was always used to put a candle in it.

:hehe:
i've never actually put a candle on top a empty bottle, but im sure at some point ill do it. Probably when i learn how to make a good lasagna

Yes and get a red checkered table cloth. :hehe:

maybe my problem is that i've doing things in the wrong order...

i should get the table cloth, then the bottle/candle, THEN i'll be able to make a proper lasagna!
