I've been away from here for nearly a week now. Been in training half of last week. I learned to present effectively and had to be videotaped. Boy it's rough watching yourself trying to speak in front of people.

Cool :woot: Believe me, I worry everyday that my job will get outsourced abroad. And double woe to me if I have to train that person.

Did you do well in it, at least?

I know that prospective business majors at UHawaii-Manoa need to take a "public speech" class before they're allowed to enter the school.

Actually, it's one of the few classes I really tanked: I think I got a C or a D in the class...

why is it that people (managers) cannot be straight about stuff? i think ppl these days don't want to take responsiblity for anything. it is not fair. really cannot take it anymore. so misleading all the time. i think they just like to take advantage of ppl and if they can get away with cheating ppl out of stuff then they keep doing it and don't give a flying hoot. i get nothing, nada, zippola, zilch. no vacation, no personal days, no sick leaves, nothing. if don't go to work then nothing.then it is worse, on and off have stuffs to do then there are days with no stuffs to do. not only that but won't let ppl get UI. totally stinks!!! companies don't want ppl to get UI so they try to make it hard for ppl and so they will "naturally" quit. it's a lot of schemes so they don't have to pay part of the UI. not fair. and they just keep dragging the whole situation out, by making you work one day and then the whole week off with no pay.

To me, the one thing about managers is that -- as much as we don't like to admit to ourselves as a means of a "good reason why they're acting that way" -- they have a LOT of things on their mind. The Kevin Spacey character in the 1992 film Glenngarry Glenross is a really good source of what a manager's normal existence is like.

Working under a manager is a tricky thing sometimes. I guess I'm fortunate to be working for a very competent, smart, and unselfish one. But, my advice to anyone who has trouble working with their manager, they better: 1) figure out a way in which they CAN work with their manager (i.e., behavioral change); 2) start looking for other jobs in the company or elsewhere; 3) TALK to your manager; perhaps s/he has NO idea how you're feeling, and, guess what, with a manager's plate being full almost all the time? It's better if YOU approach your manager before s/he asks "is something the matter?" A side margin to taking this approach is that your manager will recognize how difficult it was to say these things, and will have a more favorable opinion of you (not to say that s/he didn't have a normal notion of this in the first place), provided, you know, that you don't get all heated and mad in such a one-to-one meeting.

Then, again, there's always that notion -- for some of us -- that we know MORE than the manager. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it isn't, sometimes it's a positive thing, sometimes it's a negative thing. For the sake of your long-term existence with the company or firm, it's up to you to assess the impact of this mindset.

And THAT's The Man's corporate survival rant of the day. :victory:
