Can't you try it on your 642? :headscratch:

silly Beem. :beatyou: :beatyou: cause I dont have one... :hehe:
I'm thinking about replacing the DVD player the parents use, so I can download taiwanese and korean dramas for them to watch.

 From your remarks, I thought you had one... Are those still available?
That model's been around for a good while... Most stuff like that only lasts for about 6-8 months before a new model replaces it...
yeah they're still around, Amazon has them in stock... dunno if theres a replacement..

My friend's been waffling about buying one since he's read that they're unreliable... But for that price (<$50?), it's not that a big of an investment loss...
true, i was going to get one, but I have a large enough monitor that I can watch comfortably on my computer... and i already have a nice DVD player in the living room.
krim wrote:Hey, does anyone know if the Phillips 642 plays the new mkv format and confirm mp4 playback...
Matroska?? Nope. MP4 playback? Only if it's Divx5/Xvid, no QPEL added, and the sound is not encoded in AC3. I think those are the major hurdles.
Any reason why we should care about those emerging formats? Sounds like they're late to the game.

I would need to find out more about these. While the majority use AVI as the container, I do see MKV popping up here and there.

I can't see it making any kinda dent in the AVI stronghold, unless some people just wanna be different... Just (yet) another codec/software thingy to worry about.

Gotcha, thanks!
Anyone here try hardsubbing dramas with exisintg softsubs?
I'm currently doing that for Geezer and was wondering if there were other approaches... I'm using Virtualdub and VSFilter to accomplish this task.

I just use the soft subs with my PC and DVD player, but it supports it so I'm fine. Gomen.

You're no help. :beatyou:

I'm just saying...
I think your approach is used by most who hardsub. They might use the filter that comes with Vobsub, but I'm sure Virtualdub is used. Why mess with other progs when these ones are free and reasonably good?

No reason.
