It's an expensive and space-consuming habit, but I always back up the original video files to CD before deleting them from my comp (after burning to DVD).

I'll have to do some more backing up actually, my HD is filling up quickly

That's a good thing... I try to be a little more selective on what stuff I save and don't save.

Like G2. :bleh:

External drive?

I'm contemplating it, considering I've gone BT-happy. :nut:

External drive is an option. But it's easier to justify buying a spindle of CD's aevery few weeks than spending a few hundred for an external drive :bonk:

I think Fry's was selling 500GB USB2.0 externals for like $140USD.... Incredible.

Having troubles converting a few files to DVD with ConvertXtoDVD... Always San Chome No Yuhi was in MPG format. It plays OK on my comp, but the conversion falls over every time I try - or does it? It seems to create the VOB files ok but won't go any further. I have the same problem with Udon - it gets to a certain point in the process, then fails. I can't see what error it produces because of the length of the filename and location makes the end of the message unreadable :(
When I try to burn the created VOB's with Nero, it fails too :(

Could it be the characters in the file name that are the problem?

Seems like an easy enough thing to try...

Is Udon an .avi?

I didn't have a problem converting it to .mpg and eventually to DVD... :headscratch:

I'm guessing it was the filenames. I changed the file names to Udon 1 and Udon 2 (.avi's and subs) and it worked like a charm...

Beem, what font, size and color do you use for subs? I think I must have changed something because the Udon subs turned out very small...

When I use VirtualDub to hardsub the dramas, I use a font size of 20 yellow color, outline size of 3 pixels, and zero shadow... :)

Great, i'll try that. Your subs are nice and clear..

Ditto I use Yellow and black outline also. I think a little shadow helps though in the yellow scenes where the black outline is no so apparent.

Oddly, nearly all of the subs in most legitmate DVD releases () use white with black outlines and those are hard to see when the background is a black and white mix in that area... :headscratch:

I think having a thicker outline really makes the subs stand out. :)

Gah, no option for outline in ConvertXtoDVD :banghead:

Use VirtualDub to handle the hardsub, then use ConvertXtoDVD for the final encode/fit to DVD steps.... :)

LOL, i'm trying to avoid extra steps.... I authored a movie last night with the "new" subs setup, I'll see how it looks.

I will have to re-do Udon though. The subs are too small to be readable :(

Hope you used a DVD-RW disc for your test...

I don't mind the extra steps if it gets the job done right... :)

Nah, I idn't bother with a RW. They are so cheap nowadays, I'll just use it as a backup disc, since they are not hard subs :)
