I'm not totally resigned to the notion of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." :beaten:
I'm just grateful that you're checking out all the programs out there. :) Hopefully there's something out there that makes good menus, takes less than 3 hours, and is a cinch to use. :fingerscrossed:

Isn't that what ConvertX does?
I guess I'd try using that, but I've read that it's output quality is only fair to good... Mainly because of the encoding engine that it uses: speed over quality.
As far as making good menus, you really have to do that manually.

There aren't different menu choices in ConvertX, so the format is pretty much the same. That bothers me when I want to put a pic in the background and the text covers someone's face. It's the price to pay for convenience.
If you would like to see a finished product that I did with ConvertX, I could send you a sample. That way you can compare it to the other programs that you use.

That's okay.... From all that I've read, other conversion engines like TMPGEnc and HCenc are better...

.
Apparently the new version will be lots better in that regard :fingerscrossed:
I've toyed around with conversion, but Divx seems to be the "thing" now, offering high quality and smaller file sizes(than mpg2). I'm trying to learn more in my free time since my xbox360 can play divx. Anybody know what settings to use for high quality divx conversion? Like video dimensions, bit rate, etc. I've seen some very high quality 40 minutes long videos at 704x396 but under 400MB. All this is way over my head.
Yeah, DivX is the "in thing," but they want money to use their encoder, else it's limited and/or you get that obnoxious "DivX" logo on your encoded video.
That's why I'm using it's free equivalent, XviD... Very similar performance, without the attached strings. :victory:

But when will it be available?
And I authored a DVD yesterday and hoped to watch it some time soon. Unfortunately, when I checked it out, I noticed the lack of subtitles. Looks like I forgot to download the softsubs. :banghead: Will I never learn? :shamefulcry:
I might just try beem's program again since ConvertX does lower the quality of the episodes. I just hope I remember how to use it. :fingerscrossed:

You guys will never learn. :shakehead:
It's like baking a cake from scratch or using one of those box mixes: the cake is only as good as the effort and ingredients put into it.... :victory:
Agh, I had high hopes for HCEnc, but I noticed that the encoder seems to have problems with images with repetitive patterns like stonework and brickwork in buildings: I get those distracting moire patterns...
shiroi_tora wrote:Can someone please recommend a good converting program which converts avi's to dvd format. the one i use takes 6 hours to make a dvd fully :grumble:
Which one is that?
Some of us use ConvertXtoDVD: It's a fairly simple program that gives good results. The speed will depend on your comp specs, unfortunately, because it's a really processor-intensive thing to do. I'm sure beem will tell you what he uses also :)
ConvertX will take your avi files, convert them to DVD format and burn them too.
