Icons are a necessary evil and convenience... To have to incessantly pull up the Start Menu is a pain in the ass.
Having no icons on your desktop also means you don't use your computer for anything except surfing and e-mail. :P
I use my computer probably more than half the people on this forum (and no thats not a generalization...) Apart from my actual job which is on the computer X_X I do graphic design which requires as Wynter can tell ya various programs ranging from adobe photoshop, to adobe image ready, illustrator to 3d studio max etc. Furthermore, my studies require me to use lots of chemistry and science software and obviously word processors hehe.
Here is a picture of just some of my 166 Icons (yes and I use 90% of all those)

Having no icons on the desktop just means you like to display your wallpaper (in this case my own which I make). If one cannot take 1 second to click an icon folder and then click the actual icon then you just lazy.
As for going to start and program files and looking for a program thats just dumb... That is worse than having icon on your desktop.... so at least we agree on that one point.
Note: Wynter being the artist/teacher that you are I expected you at least to understand the beauty behind having a clean desktop but I guess I was wrong in thinking that way :shamefulcry:
Edit: Most people who have their screen cluttered with icons always tend to be the ones who have no clue about computer and the ones who get the viruses. My friend works for bestbuy (you know the geek squad hehe) and we always be joking around how the more icons you have on your desktop the more viruses they have to clean up. There seems to be a connection with people who know jack about computer and the number of icons they have (I have heard people saying "oh but if you delete the icon wont you delete the program?" ok....... hehehe) While not all, most who have loads of icons also don't protect their computers against viruses and specially spywares (let alone use proper firewalls) which thankfully they aren't important enough to bother hacking anyways.
So yeah maybe I shouldn't comment on about having too many icons but if you going to truly show your desktop then just show the wallpaper by itself (which I noticed some of you do and for that )
If I was to show my icons(just the ones I use everyday) my entire screen would probably be full... so I hope you understand what I mean when I say just shove all your icons in 1 folder and just click that, it looks better, and is definetely more professional (earns ya 1 cool point heheh )
Edit 2: Lol the beauty of linux (and well other applications) is the multiple desktop feature... drool... is amazing... :nut:
On the other hand now with all the widgets being created desktop are becoming a clutter-fest as I was reading on a magazine article which explains how icons need to become more productive and do more than be a command line to open a program...
Note: Lol we said our point of view and lets let this puppy to rest ok?
I wont comment on your cluttered desktops and we wont continue the icon discussion, cool? (hehe Wynter this sounds familiar eh?, we think too much alike...)
