Well here we are many years later with the chance to answer that question, and the truth is... I don't know. I find it hard to even decide whether I like it or not. I can say I am glad they took a different perspective on the story, it gives some reason to appreciate it, but I don't think it quite works this way. It's presented from the perspective of Inoue Mao's character rather than directly focusing on Seita and setsuko. I can't help but feel that this obviously lessens the impact of the whole story. Another thing that is really bothersome is the horrible special effects. I realise that this is a made for TV movie and that it obviously isn't going to have a super high budget, but for a story as classic as Hotaru no Haka how can you skimp and not do it proper justice. Which actually sums up my main point quite well, and that is that while it was good and I did like it, I actually think they shouldn't have bothered remaking it, that they should have just left it alone. |

Sure, it might be hard to reach the novel's level, but it is also hard to mess up with such a good foundation. It is also unavoidable to compare with the well-known anime from 1988 with the same name. First of all it is a bit different, mainly the feeling it emits, but not necessarily worse. More things happen, which is expected since the drama is one hour longer than the anime. So they explain more regarding the circumstances and such. That's a shame, because they explain a bit too much. The anime lets you draw your own conclusions, which is more effective. However, the movie is still definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen the anime. But somehow it lacks the atmosphere, the magic, that the anime has. |
3. | Comments by Jeanxi [Rating: 10/10] An extremely touching story. I'm glad that they decided to portray the live-action version with a different perspective so that the audience can also sympathize with the aunt (who can hate Matsushima Nanako anyway, right?). The amazing acting of Nanako and the little girl really carried the show. I think I cried for pretty much the entire duration of the movie ~>.<~ |
4. | Comments by moonchyld [Rating: 8/10] it was an amazing adoptation, i liked the way the drama spent more time on the aunt and why she became who she was.. but i guess nothing could compare to the emotional impact of the anime version. the child actress who portrayed the little sister was cute, but she was unable to deliver the drama part of her role. i loved the brother though. :) |
5. | Comments by rikastar [Rating: 8/10] The story is a winner already. Very touching story that shows the ugliness of war. What the stepmother did was just cruel but we also see that she had no choice at all, and she did so after a long battle with her inner self. The pair who portrayed Seita and Setsu are really good... the image of the frail and dying Setsu is haunting. |
6. | Comments by atheon [Rating: 8/10] Dec 2005: This drama tells us about the hardships people faced during WW2, how selfish and inconsiderate people can be to survive, and told us not to repeat the same thing again. Nanako delivered a great performance as the 'evil' aunt, and the actors who played the bro and sis did a good job too. |
7. | Comments by MixxDreamer [Rating: 10/10] i love the anime and most of all the live drama, it was the most emotional but deprresing and good movie/drama special of the year.. the 2 actors who played seita and setsuko were so good, i could totally felt their sorrows and grief, its much more better than watching the anime. |
8. | Comments by athida [Rating: 10/10] Omg this was so sad! T_T The story is so touching and the actors are amazing! The little girl especially. It's a little strange but convincing to see Matsushima Nanako and Inoue Mao as mother and daughter in here after watching them in Hana Yori Dango. They are both excellent! |
9. | Comments by Lee-chan [Rating: 9/10] Every bit as touching as the 1988 animation. Ishida and Sasaki were excellent in their roles as the siblings struggling to survive, and Matsushima was stellar in her role as the torn and hardened aunt. If you don't cry while watching this, there's something wrong with you. |
10. | Comments by atleast13 [Rating: ?/10] this is not bad if you compare it to the anime. i saw the anime early last year and i cried non-stop. i was so crushed. this one was somewhat different because nanako's character had more airtime. i sympathize with her character more than in the anime. she was cruel there! |
11. | Comments by Dr_Pain [Rating: 8/10] very sad story...good conversion from anime
Setsuko was just too cute....T___T"
and at the beginning when I watched it I didn't notice that Inoue Mao is in it too XD
but yes it's must for the ones who really love hotaru no haka as Anime anyway ^__^ |
12. | Comments by xhidex33 [Rating: 6/10] Similar to the anime, which was very nice. I guess people become annoying at hard times... (I can't stand it when Setsuko cries... really annoying...) Not really my kind of thing tho.. |
13. | Comments by sucigam [Rating: 7/10] I thought the anime was way better, the drama uses melodrama where as the anime is much more subtle and well...artistic. Worth checking out but this is definitely no masterpiece. |
14. | Comments by kurii [Rating: 9/10] Touching story of war survival hardships from many different views. Enjoyed watching it just as much as watching the anime, maybe even more. |
15. | Comments by Sevenz [Rating: 10/10] Superb show, I felt the sufferings of Seita-kun and Sec-chan completely. So moving, and one of the best tearjerker dorama I've ever watched. |
16. | Comments by sw33t_laydee [Rating: 7/10] It was pretty good. I cried. It seems to have best illustrated what it's like for children living through a on-going war. Very sad |
17. | Comments by MissMonika [Rating: 9/10] This drama is really sad!! The anime made me cry so much, and so did this drama. Actors are phenomenal. Great WWII movie. |

19. | Comments by Qky [Rating: 7/10] Somehow not that appealing to me. But nevertheless, a good performance by Matsushima Nanako and Inoue Mao. |
20. | Comments by octane [Rating: 8/10] the girl was cute, some part very touching.
but I still like the anime version better |
21. | Comments by gaijinmark [Rating: 8/10] 'War is cruelty, you cannot disguise it." - W.T. Sherman. Nanako was at her best. |
