Any recommendations for software to hardsub avi files. My divx player displays softubs, but I find them hard to read.

I use VirtualDub with the textsub filter. :victory:

Found here? http://www.virtualdub.org/ :headscratch:
Just a couple of questions, is it easy to use? And it doesn't re-encode the file does it?

You have to re-encode when you hardsub... That's the only way the subs get embedded into the video.

If you use the highest quality setting (I use XviD, Quality=1) there's very little degradation at all, though your file size might double.

Double size. I might have to get another hard drive.

You can also try other quality settings, just to see how good/bad it is.

EDIT: We also have a thread for video conversion and whatnot here: http://jdorama.com/viewtopic.5900.htm :victory:

Some interesting observations:

1. My computer would inadvertently shut down when I was printing or scanning and after some Googling, some people with similar problems replaced their PSU, so I did the same and it appears to have fixed the problem... Apparently those two USB devices were drawing enough current to pull down the voltage on my PSU and cause it to shut down.

Guess the PSU was getting old.

2. Since I upgraded my DSL speed, I noticed that downloading any large streams from places like YouTube or Megaupload would stall and not complete without restarting. After my Netgear router died and I replaced it with just a simple Ethernet switch, the streaming problem seems to have gone away... Maybe the hardware firewall in the router was the culprit.

With the router dead, I'll never know.

Meh, i'll have my new lappy soon. I think i'm actually getting an even better one as a desktop replacement that I can take home also :)

Using this now: It's not as fast as my desktop, unfortunately, but that's going to happen I guess. I'm liking Windows 7 sofar, it's not doing anything crazy yet. I'll be taking it home for an extended trial this weekend.

Let's see how it handles your video conversion software...

I've got it hooked up to a 17" 4:3 LCD as a second monitor. Because the lappy is a widescreen, anything I push over to the LCD looks funny, and I can't adjust the LCD resolution to it's native resolution because it's not available as an option :banghead: I might need to get a widescreen LCD as my 2nd monitor.

They are really cheap nowadays. I would get one if I didn't have one already.

Here's one: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/17891

There's one for under $200 last week.

It's OK, turns out it was only 1 program that was a problem. I can live with that :)

Alrighty, I have TWO questions:

1) is there a way I can encrypt a disc so that it CAN'T be copied/duplicated?

2) can someone walk me through how to install convertXtoDVD on a vista system?

I don't think so.

Store-bought DVDs have encryption for copying and regions, but software hacks have been created to crack them... With relative ease.

2) can someone walk me through how to install convertXtoDVD on a vista system?

Is that program even compatible with Vista?

If so, shouldn't it install like any other program?

I have it (the first one) on my bro's PC, but I need it on sis's and I don't remember what the code is.

I think if you click on the "Help" menu, then click "About..." it might have the code there... Otherwise, you'll have to PM A-Dad.
