You should use an mpg editor (I use Womble MPEG Video Wizard) to edit out the commercials and just re-author a new DVD... No conversion required and no degradation.

Is that the program that you suggested to me before? There were so many that I can never remember what everything was for.

So that's the only program that I should use to do what I need to do, right? I really should try putting the file onto my laptop and fiddle around with it first. Thanks for your input, beem. :D

Probably.

You'd remember if you used it instead of mothballing it... :P

I accept cash.

Okay, two things:

1. I currently have a file that's a whopping 7.26 gigs. What would be the best software to use to split this file into two? You know, so that I can burn it onto two seperate disks to make DVDs?

2. I'm having trouble with .iso files. I have the imgburn program, but every freaking time I try to use it, the freaking thing gives me an error message at 86% :shakehead:. I've tried to use it with three seperate files, and none of them have completed more than 86% :banghead:. Any ideas? Better programs available? I hate .iso files right about now...

Wouldn't it be better to burn it to a DL disc?

What format is the file?

If it's an mpeg2 file, the best thing to do is to author it as is, then use DVD Shrink ( http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD_Shrink ) to fit it to a single DVD (DVD Shrink will also let you span the DVD across two discs, if you don't want to compress the video at all)...

It was in DVD format (VTS), but I changed it to mpeg2. I'll try the shrink program. Thanks again :victory:

If it's in VTS/VOB format you don't have to change a thing: DVDShrink will read those files as is. :)

Apparently DVD Rebuilder does the same thing: http://www.jdobbs.com/Pages/Downloads.htm

Never used it... And I'm not familiar with the encoder that's used either.

I should give it a try one day.

I've been browsing videohelp.com today: There's so many tools around I didn't know about.

LOL. I have :)

A computer mag I subscribe to has made their own video encoding products also. They seem pretty good :)

@ Anime Dad & bmwracer: I'll try them both and let you know how it turns out. Thanks guys. You always answer my stupid questions ;)

We're the one-stop help thread

I tried out VideoReDo TV Suite last night for editing ads out of an episode of The Iron Chef I recorded on my DVD recorder. The actual ad cutting part works really well, I haven't checked the results on my DVD player yet but from what I saw on my PC you can't even see the cuts. I don't think i'll be using the DVD authoring part though... it's pretty basic.

So you have a hack for VideoReDo?

Yeah, the editing should be really good, since you can move forward and back frame-by-frame... Seamless edits. :victory:

I want to try it out on other things, but I think it only does mpeg-2 and files from Tivo boxes, that kind of thing :(

I think Womble can edit avi or mpg files...

That would be interesting. VideoReDo doesn't do .avi. I have a little gadget that records to flash card, in .mp4 format. I haven't found an editor that works directly with those files yet.

Just rename the mp4 to avi.

VirtualDub can handle avi editing as easily as Womble handles mpg. :)
