Oh, I forgot to mention that this is on a DVD and was recorded off TV, so it's already hardsubbed. All I need to do is:

~ extract the file from the DVD and put it onto the computer, which I figure is the hardest part.
~ then all edit the file with the program you mentioned earlier (forgot the name atm)
~ and finally author it to DVD like I normally do...right?

Um, if what beem uses is like what I use (VideoReDo) you don't have to extract the file first, you open the DVD with the program, select all the .vob files in the video_ts folder. The program asks if you want them combined into one file for editing (Yes, of course). Then you just set the beginning and end points of what you want to delete, hit the "Delete" button and repeat. At the end you save the file to your comp and then author as usual.

She'll need to extract the mpg from the DVD in order to re-author... I don't think you can author directly from the vob file, especially if it's been edited.

And I think recorders create a slightly different structure: they don't create vob files.... At least my Panasonic doesn't.

Mine does.

From memory it saves the output as a .mpg file, but doesn't re-encode.

LOL! I think he's becoming immune to them now. Finally.

I use iMovie to edit things out of episodes... but I guess that doesn't help anyone. :hehe:

My Panasonic records as mpg as well, just with a different extension.... I think that's the industry standard.

Oops, no what I meant was that my Samsung DVD recorder records to .vob files, but when you save the output of VideoreDo it saves to .mpg ;)

So ka.

Anyways, editing stuff from a DVD doesn't require any re-encoding whatsover so the process of editing and re-authoring shouldn't take that long...

If you know what you're doing. :beaten:

My understanding was that with those types of programs, they only re-encode if you add in a transition or something, and then it only re-encodes the bits where the transition is.

I finally got a chance to copy the files to my laptop and they were VOB files, so yay, no need to extract or do anything fancy. :victory:

...now to wait till they're all on my laptop and to try to figure out what file is what because the way the person who originally made/edited this disc, made it weird. =T

This is probably because I'm using a trial version of that MPEG Video Wizard Project, but it's saving it as some weirdo application that I cannot open without that VWP program. I have no idea how to save it as a VOB again, so I'm confused. Maybe I need the real program and not the stupid trial.

With that said, I think I figured out how to edit stuff using that program and it seemed easier than I thought. Here's hoping I can actually get the files back to normal though.

Uh, if you plan to edit the commercials from those files, then you'll most likely have to extract the mpeg2 file from the VOB.

Thanks for the link! I'm currently using it to convert the files to mpeg.

Another stupid question: does it combine files together? I noticed that for one episode, it's broken up into about 2-3 files.

ETA: oh wait, it looks like the whole thing was combined by itself. Cool :victory:

Sounds easier, but I tried beem's method and the vob thingies combined without my noticing, so unless I'm totally frustrated, I'll try this method for now. :)

Um, more trouble. Even though I converted it to mpeg and edited the whole thing and everything, it still saved it as that weird file I was mentioning:

http://www.corichan.com/Images3/mpegvideowizard.jpg

I have no idea how to save it so it's a regular mpeg file. And I can't believe that I closed the finished product without checking to see if it was saved ok. :banghead:

Uh, you've gotta be more detailed with your descriptions: what is "it?"

And what are you trying to do?
