Anyway, another headache of mine (*waits for beem to cringe when he sees who bumped up this topic* :beaten: ):

I'm currently manually editing some softsubs so the lines of the subtitles evenly fits the DVD authoring tool's screen that I'm using, but there has to be some easier way of doing this rather than each line individually, right?

I'm using Subtitle Workshop, but it's hard to figure out how to do exactly what I want, or even how to go about doing it. If someone could explain how to configure the subtitle lines so they look even on the top and the bottom, that would be wonderful. Thanks!

If anyone's confused about exactly what I'm trying to do, I could put up a pic.

I don't think you can ever make them all even without a whole lotta work...

If you were to hardsub using VirtualDub, there's a setting in the subtitle configuration that forces the subs to not exceed a certain width, so that you don't get a "bleed over" of the subs...

So the VirtualDub make the lines even on the top and bottom or do I still have to do that manually? I can't believe what a perfectionist I'm becoming.

Have you fiddled around with the subtitle settings in ConvertX3? Seems like you could do it there instead of messing around with editing subtitle files.

It doesn't make them "even"... It just makes sure they don't exceed a certain width and adds another line if necessary...

If there's a lot of text, you could have three, four, or more lines... Which would be rather obtrusive...

When I hardsubbed the movie, Warau Mikaeru, one group of subs was like five or six lines, filling up half the screen... :shakehead: Needless to say I had to edit not just those subs, but all of them. :grumble:

I halfassedly tried fooling around with the settings, but it didn't show immediate results, so I don't know if it's going to work.

The DVD authoring program that I use automatically makes the lines fit the screen, but there is often a weirdness going on like this person's issue: http://forums.vso-software.fr/another-subtitle-issue-t5540.html

I don't mind 3 lines of text on a screen. More than that is no good though.

"halfassedly" - love it, that's a great word  It might pay to keep trying, you might get the results without having to edit subs.

The problem shown is a result of the subtitles having line breaks at a different point compared to the subtitling program.

To fix that problem, don't add your own line breaks to the subtitles and let the program make the line breaks.

Haha, I love that word too. And I'm going to keep on trying; it just seems like a really long and time-consuming process.

In some of the cases, the line was just one continuous line and it still broke up the lines weirdly. Maybe I'll just be less anal and only edit the lines if it's going to be too long for the program and just live with the non-even lines.

If that's the case, then there's a bug in the program... Maybe the program doesn't like lines beyond a certain length and that spazzes it out.

Does Virtual Dub handle .smi subs? I have 3 eps of a drama that have .smi subs, they play great on the comp but ConvertX doesn't recognise them :(

Not sure... If there's a filter for it, then yes.

You could use Subtitle Workshop to convert the .smi subs to something that ConvertX can handle... :victory:

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that. Especially since I noticed that one of the lines is 160 characters long. Why do they make subs that long anyway? =T

Can you convert them with Subtitle Workshop (save it as .srt)? I have to do that for the stupid .ass subs.

Yeah, tried that. It didn't come out well :(

Brevity-challenged.

When I see lines that long, I automatically edit and shorten them: they're always wordy anyways.

I'd edit and shorten them too, but sometimes they're necessary. I wish I knew how to edit the subs/timing so that I could put part of the subs a few seconds later.

ooh, i've done that before. But it was moving ALL the subs about 10 seconds earlier after a certain point, because somebody chopped a section of a video file out (the bit with the advertising)

Not if you're creative. :victory:

Oh jeez. That's something I DON'T want to do because it'll just make me even more frustrated. Looks like I'll have to live with the screwed up subs and edit it as best as I can.

I spent hours trying to figure it out, but in the end it was so easy. I don't have the prog in front of me now though.

I fixed this problem. I opened them in Crimson Editor (Which is a text editor that I use for html, PHP etc) and used the Replace function to replace the extraneous crap - mostly stuff like {\fs22\a1} - with nothing, which effectively deletes it. Then open with Subtitle Workshop and save as .srt :)
