Ack, LiteOn. :bleh:

My first Region-free hacked DVD player was a LiteOn... Piece o' junk: after a couple of years, it started glitching on playback and the tray wouldn't open consistently without a little tap on the top of the player. :shakehead:

I junked it last year and bought a $45 Philips from Wal-Mart that was less than half the price and twice as good (so far).

I've got a Panasonic DVD recorder and it's been great for the past two years... Though if you going to buy one now, I'd buy one with an HD tuner in it, since we're making the permanent change to HD next year.

And the discs were Verbatims, DVD-R. I did record one using a DVD-RW, which was a big mistake according to my brother. I wish I knew that earlier.

My Panasonic allows me to record using DVD-RAM discs, which are rewritable like DVD-RWs, which the Panny can also use. :)

Yeah, the Liteon sucks. I can't really complain since I got it for an Xmas present a year ago.

So Panasonic is good? My brother was telling me that JVC has a good one that cleans up the picture good when you're recording from a video tape, but it's been discontinued for some reason. :( And do you know of any DVD recorders with a harddrive or something like that? He was telling me those are good, but he didn't give me a link or tell me any specific brands. Or maybe he did and I just can't remember.

I think the major brands, Sony and Panasonic have models with and without hard drives, but the ones with hard drives are quite pricey, around $300-$500, I believe.

Here's a link: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdrecorders

BTW, we have a DVD Recorder thread: http://jdorama.com/viewtopic.6946.htm :beaten:

Maybe I should merge all these threads together.

Yikes. They sure are pricy. At this point, I'm recording 4 shows, so I might just consider getting one of those. Thanks for the link!

And I didn't realize that there was a thread specifically for DVD recorders (no one posted there since 2005 so it looks almost extinct). It would really help if someone made an index for the General Discussions section.

Or if people used the search engine. :beaten: :P

Check out this list of programs: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?listuser=&orderby=Rating&s=35#35

You might find one to your liking. :)

Or you can buy a new DVD player that can play .avi files... The $45 Philips player from Wal-Mart does a fine job... :victory:

Umm, it would be great if someone could answer my queries, I wouldn't want to be desperate enough to resort to stealing! :bonk: :hehe:

Am looking for a good quality .gif file maker, something that can convert .avi files to .gif...

I tried the Super Converter, but apparently the quality is so bad, I only see specks of dots here and there, kinda like ants moving around the screen. :(

Have you tried searching through the list of tools available at videohelp.com?

It's a great source for audio and video conversion tools, as well as tech support. :victory:

Well...everything worked out perfectly! ...until I got to episode 8. When I tried skipping to the next episode, it went back to the episode 8 menu. The only way you can watch episode 9 is from the main menu, which can get annoying. I think it's because episode 1-8 had just 3 chapters, while episode 9 and 10 had 4 chapters. If that's not it, I have no idea where I went wrong. :(

This was a lengthy process, so I'm burning it to DVD for now. Still, I think I might try redoing it. Hopefully you can help me out again, beem.

The number of episodes in each track shouldn't make any difference to the program... Did you set up the authoring to have an actual ten tracks?

The conversion process is always long, but the authoring shouldn't be too bad... And once you're past the conversion, you can try different authoring variations without have to convert the files over and over again.

Re: ConvertXtoDVD.

According to cori, the program doesn't allow more than four files to be converted to dvd at one time... She's been trying to pack something like ten 15-minute Asadoras onto a single DVD using that program, but no luck... Is this really a limitation in the software? Is there a workaround?

As an alternate solution, I've got her using DVD Flick which allows any number of files to be packed into a DVD (given the quality settings) and using another program (TMPGEnc DVD Author) to author the DVD.

The current version of DVD Flick creates chapters, but not menus... A beta version does create menus, but it's buggy.

Hmmm... I've only ever done a max of four episodes on a disc, but I can try doing 5+ to see if it's a software thingy. I'll have to do it tomorrow when I have access to the bro's compy. :victory:

I'm sure i've done more eps than 4 per disc with ConvertX. As my comp isn't working, I can't be sure how I did it.... Yes, I AM sure. I did about 7 eps of an anime per disc...
