i have questions:
1. What Nero version is the best? or at least the most user friendly
The correct answer would be "None of them", but I guess the newest version, whatever it is now.
2. does nero automatically converts .avi or .mp4 files to dvd so i could play it on dvd player?
yes, but the results aren't always great.
3. if no, what program can you recommend me w/o the program's name seen on the out put *i hope you could get what i mean*?
You mean a program that doesn't need to be registered? Hmmm. That would require a cracked program, or a program with a serial number. Easy enough to find if you want to. Myself and others use ConvertXtoDVD, which is very simple to use and produces good results in one operation - and you can add softsubs with it. Beem uses a combination of programs, which I can't remember atm.
4. does nero aloow you to personalize the dvd menu? like putting pics and music?

I hope he can shed some light on this. I'm sure he's probably mentioned it hundreds of times before
I haven't yet found a method I'm happy with for DVD authoring and encoding that produces the best results. I've tried using the guide on D-Addicts HERE but I keep getting errors and I feel that it's a bit dated. I know there are many many guides on VideoHelp, but as to which is the best one, beats me. Many of those are dated as well.
So Beem, what is your tried and true method? :beaten:

1. Hardsub each file using VirtualDub and VobSub.
2. Convert each hardsubbed AVI file to MPEG2 using TMPGEnc Plus.
3. Author the DVD using TMPGEnc DVD Author.
It's somewhat of a convoluted process compared to everyone's favorite one-program-does-it-all piece of software, ConvertX2DVD, but it appears to be less problematical as well.
Been using the same method for the past four years and it's been very reliable and the quality of the results are very good as Geezer would attest. :victory:
Okay, thanks! I've used ConvertX2DVD and while I do find it nice, I liked having some more control over the process which yours accomplishes. Off I go! Thanks again

Sure thing... If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. :victory:

I need to copy this down for future reference. I don't think I ever saw these steps it in plain English before (unless I overlooked it )

To be honest, the steps are a little more involved, but that's the basic gist of it.
Uh, you wouldn't need it for future reference if you were doing this already: you'd have it memorized. :P
I've been following a guide that included me doing an AviSynth script and my Tmpgenc Plus encoder didn't want to accept it so I've opted for CCE instead. Oh well, I'll still end up using Tmpgenc DVD Authoring in the end :victory:

Yeah, but I could never remember the programs, yet alone, the order that you use them. I also couldn't think of what they were used for either.

True. I'll try my hand at it once I get a faster computer. And when I stop being so lazy. :beaten:

And AviSnyth script???
Why??
All you need to do is create a hardsubbed AVI using VirtualDub and VobSub and it's ready for TMPGEnc Plus...
I actually was using a movie that I didn't need subtitles for so I skipped that step.
What the AviSynth script allowed me to do was convert my PAL source to NTSC and deal with a funky resolution I had. Who the heck rips a video to 720x436?!
In future situations though, I will be using your method. The source this time was weird :bonk:

Ack, PAL to NTSC is always a messy task..
720x436? That's an odd aspect ratio... Is the image distorted?
Hmm, I guess it is stretched a bit... After I had done my encode and got to the authoring tool, I realized my ac3 audio time didn't match my video time. Had to convert that from PAL to NTSC as well. Ha, a good thing I caught it though or else the movie would've become less enjoyable as I was watching it

Told ya that PAL to NTSC was a pain.
Isn't there a tool somewhere at Videohelp.com that can make the PAL to NTSC conversion without all that fuss?
I'm not sure. I haven't done a ton of searching on that site even though there's gotta be something out there. I got it all taken care of hopefully and I don't plan on doing any PAL conversions anytime soon so I'll just worry about that in the future :beaten:

Uh, why do you need to make the conversion anyway? It should play on your PC just fine...
EDIT: You must be converting it for a standalone player, ne?
